I was on Zack's site and saw the stretched Wag/Chero beast... it had a Power steering fluid cooler on the fenderwell... for hydroboost? What's that?

Some of the Chebbies I have seen and worked on have hydroboost. Instead of vacuum, the brakes are boosted by hydraulic pressure from the powersteering pump, hence hydroboost.

the big 6 bmws use hydroboost brakes.they use the power steering pump and a buncha other stuff. prolly some advantages to it, but i dont know what. seems needlessly over-complicated to me

It was used on a lot of GM, BMW, Jag apps.
I agree with Andy...looks impressive but it seems like the hard way(read:expensive) to do something simple. http://www.jeepingoffroad.com/vanco.htm

I had a C30 Chevy with the 6.2 diesel with the Banks setup. The diesels use the hydroboost setup as there is no vacuum to run a booster. Never had any problems with it. It was a great truck until someone wanted it and borrowed it without asking. :(

I put a Hydroboost on my old CJ-5 and it worked great. Power steering and power brakes all in one shot. And as far as the hard way to do something, what do you call that vacume line from hell mess under the hood?

I guess we're just from different schools here 64trav... smile.gif
I don't consider one $0.50 rubber hose from the manifold to the vac booster as a "vacume line from hell mess under the hood?" but that's just me I guess...seeing as how I only have two vac lines, the one to the booster and one to the distributor...<shrug>?

The Hydroboost was devoloped by Saginaw steering for Ford motor co to use in the 77 and 78 Large car lines like LTD's and Town cars. These were very heavy cars and needed a lot of effort to stop. It also was the base for the first antilock braking system that was intro'ed in 77 on the LTD wagon. Since that time it has been used on all GM diesel powered cars, Astro vans, Motorhomes, pickups(mostly diesel) and many others. It is the heavy duty assist system and is used where vac boosters just can't get the job done. My 78 winnebago even has it. I am seriously considering it on my Wag as it is a very good system and does not take up much space.

Yours may not, my 66 might not and my 64 only has 1 to the dist. But the last wag I worked on was a maze of vacume lines. I changed all of them and hooked them back up like they were supposed to be. It runs a lot better now but there looked to be a mile of hose in there.

My Audi's use this system, big hydralic pump, acumulator and all the bits for the steering and brake system.

IIRC, somebody had to use one on a 258 that they put the Mopar fuel injection on because the brake booster got in the way.

I ought to try that line on some kid with a muscle car....Hmmm.. noticeing that there are less and less kids with classic rides. Seem to be runnin Grand Ams and Jap Junk. No taste or style anymore.

AND ONE MORE THING.............. ...THAT F 700 WITH A LOAD OF LOGS,CAN'T STOP FOR CRAP........ THE ONLY AIR IN THAT SUCKER IS WHEN THE WINDOW IS DOWN!!!!!!... .....MY TRUCK WILL NOT STOP!!!!! AND I SAY TO HIM....BITE ME!!!!! ........  ..ME!!!!!

Anyone that would buy a class 7 truck (which the f700 is) without air brakes is kinda foolish anyhow. You just can not stop that much weight with hyd brakes as the pedal effort becomes enormus.

Due to space restrictions I put hydroboost on my wifes'(the real scoutgrl) scout.Added the power steering at the same time.Definately better than none. Also if you have a nasty cam and no vacumn signal you'd be better off with it than a booster. DENNIS

Had that system on an old Audi that I had. One major drawback is when that pump goes out or springs a leak you loose your power steering and almost all braking ability. On the other hand, showed that that Audi could off road, went up a steeper bank than I thought I could do in a 4x4 when the pump quit. :D
