How do I get the drive chain off the gears? I've split the case and its right there, do I need to remove the gears to get it off? Also, is there an acceptable amount of play in the chain? Or should it not move at all?

well i pulled the shaft and removed all 200+ needle bearings and removed it that way. You will have some play since the shaft will be able to move since the other half is missing.
Good luck.

I was able to get it off by taking the gear off the shaft for the front driveshaft yoke. I don't know if I'll be able to get the new one on that way though, we'll see. I still have to order it. First, I need to go christmas shopping....ugh! Its nice to have a warm garage I can leave the Jeep in and not have to worry about getting it all done right away in the freezing cold.

Yes, you pull out the front shaft and gear with the chain; try to leave the mainshaft in-place.
