View Full Version : Upgrading to an electric fan, question.
Ok, so my fan clutch is toast and my big woody is overheating. ( can I say that here? redface.gif ) I'd like to upgrade to an electric fan. I found a Flex-a-lite that I wanted and I can wire it up no problem. However, I need to know what I should do when removing the current fan off the block. I know I need to follow all the steps to remove it but what do I need to put it back together? What can I leave off and what do I need to keep when putting it back together?

Just remove the 4 bolts that hold the fan on. Remove the fan, put the 4 bolts back in. Are you going to have a thermostat run the fan?

I had to go get shorter bolts to put back in because the stock ones were too long. Easy find at my local hardware. I hard mounted my electric fan to the radiator supports and made sure the fan shroud was pushed against the radiator so it had a good seal. I bought a flex-a-lite with a built in thermostat, easy to use. I also upgraded to a high-output alternator to make up for the draw of the fan. Good luck. Let me know if you need any ideas for mounting, maybe I could scrounge up some pics.

Is it really that easy? It can't be. Nothing on these engines is ever really that easy... tongue.gif
I'm going to have both a thermostat and and AC switch relay. With the pusher fan I have in front of the AC condenser and the fan (Flex-A-Lite Black Magic) pulling air on the engine side, I should be able to solve all my overheating problems.

About that alternator.........
Unless the one you have is already on the way out, I'd keep it. The stock alternator is a 60 amp alternator and has enough load carrying capability to run everything including your electric fan. I have a 135 amp alternator but that's because a large stereo system is in the future plans and the old one was crapping out anyways.
Well, due to my own stupidity, I ended up having to change out the alternator anyway. I got a 78 amp AC Delco unit. No worries there.

Hope you didn't get the black magic 150!!! Just went through trying to put one on. The housing is too deep and won't fit. I tried everything short of butchering it. Going to try to find a fan shroud and work with my clutch fan.
Good Luck!!!

That was one that I was considering. The alternative is a dual fan setup. What about it is too deep that causes a problem?
Also, how do you like your manifold and carb setup? I have the same setup but haven't put them on yet.
