Is the Dana 44 front and rear axle of a 75-79 Wagoneer(not WT)the same width as the 87-89 Grand Wagoneer Dana 44? How much wider is the WT axle vs the NT?

the size is not the issue it is the offset

SO ARE YOU SAYING THAT THE WIDTH IS THE SAME LENGTH, HUB TO HUB ? I UNDERSTAND THAT THE DIFF'S ON CERTAIN YEARS ARE OFFSET, BUT IF THEY ARE THE SAME, CAN YOU USE A CHEROKEE CHIEF WT FRONT OR REAR AXLE IN A WAGONEER NT, MEANING THEY ARE BOTH INTERCHANGABLE IN WIDTH OR CAN IT BE THE RIMS THAT OFFSET THE WIDTH? EX: 87-88 GRAND WAG REAR AXLE IN A 82 CHIEF WT OR 78 WAG NT. THANKS FOR THE INFO!!

WT=wide track (some 2-door Cheros), NT=narrow track (some 2-door Cheros, all 4-door FSJs)
You could use a NT axle in a WT or a WT axle in a NT, but it'd look goofy. The tires would either stick way out past the fenders (WT axle, NT truck) or be way inside the fender flares (NT axle, WT truck). That's because the WT axles are 6 inches or so wider then NT axles.
The offset rear diffs were for Quadratrac transfer cases, which had the rear output in line with the front output ("normal" t/c's have the rear output lined up with the input, and only the front output offset)
I own a 79 Cherokee Chief WT. Front axle I suppose is a 44, although I can't find it written on it. There are some numbers on the diff, but not 44.
The rear axle is about 2 1/2 inch shorter than the front one. There are no numbers on it. The previous owner told me that they've changed the rear axle. So I wonder if it's a Dana 44 WT axle. How do you identify the axles?

Thanks Baker for the info. Hey, didnt all WT axles come under the jeeps with the metal fender flairs and pickups, that is if the axles havent been changed and are original?

Rob, I have an 82 and 79 cherokee chief, both are WT. The 82 ft axle and 79 chiefs ft and rear axles are all 44s and have a 44 casted in the diff case webbing on the topside, right behind where the axle tube goes into the case. To see it you will have to scrape away all the crud. The 44 may also be casted on the bottomside of the webbing. The diff cover should closely resemble a stop sign, if its completely round than its a model 20.
