The problem is with my 1974 J10 258.

The instrument panel works fine until the lights are turned on. When they are turned on the turn signals reverse and the opposite one stays on. I have replaced the light switch with a new one. I assume that I have a short, but cannot seem to find it. I could also use a wiring diagram to check everything if anyone has a good source.

I should also add when I turn the lights on the fuel gauge moves past full.

While it might be a problem with the steering-column wiring, don't overlook the possibility of bad grounds at one or more of the turn-signal lamps. This can cause the kind of condition you describe. Just test for continuity between the outer sleeve of the light-socket and a good ground.

Ah, OK; just saw your edit. How are the wires to the back of your instrument-panel connector? I'd definitely pull that panel and see how things are going back there.

look at all of the lights on the truck to see if any are dim, bright or not working. You could have a bad ground or a bulb that is causing trouble. If you suspect one, pull it and see what happens.

On a differnt car I would have weird problems if the emergency flasher switch was not pushed in all of the way. No flashers but when I turned the lights on things go weird.

good luck!

Check for a missing ground. Have you had the cluster out lately? The plug behind the oil pressure gauge might be loose or even reversed. Mine came loose and gave the symptoms you described.

Good luck,
