smooth bumpers

Has anyone smoothed out their bumpers? Like, take off the rubber strips and mold a piece of metal and shape is so that it goes with the curve on the bumper? Since two of my strips have come off I am thinking about undertaking something like this.

I ripped all the strips off and I think it makes it look much nicer and older, although I never filled in the holes, I just wanted the strips gone as some were tattered or missing and the bumper looked cluttered, like the stuff was just glued on as an after thought.
