whats involved in converting this to a 4wd case to get it bolted to a np205?

You would need to basicaly comletely dissasemble the trans and swap output shafts. Instal the Th-400/NP205 out put shaft and reassemble the trans.
I swaped output shafts in my Caddy Th400 for the D20 output shaft and didnt use any special tools just took me a few hours. Shouldnt have taken that long but I just took it slow sence it was the first time I had taken a Th400 apart that far.

I havent got my caddy 500 running so im not sure if the tranny will work right or not but I didnt have any extra peices left :)

the other thing to consider is that there are several different tailshaft/spline count configuations to consider, so you have to make sure you've got the right one.

You cold just run a divorced 205, but with as much lift as you usually have, I'm sure you want to save inches where you can.

thanks guys.i was hoping the short tail 2wd version was already the same as a 4wd.
my rig just left on a flatbed :( .ive only had to do that one other time in 12 yrs.
i could have drove it there but i didnt want to damage anything inside any more than i had to.
900 for the rebuild with a 1 yr guarantee.this is a very reputable place where the guy who originally built it worked before he died.
they seem to think the converter or a planetary went because it still shift hard and fine.
they will try to salvage the hd parts inside.i know it at least had a hd sprag assembly.
its always a sad day to see your rig go by on a flatbed. :(

The short shaft should be the same as the 4wd already. All you would need is to put on the np205 adapter and you will be in there.

What PC said.....

If you remove the small housing from the tranny... the short shaft 2wd TH400 should accept the NP205 adapter and mate with no other problems...

Now the long shaft 2wd TH400 will not work....

Mark, the only thing i was referring to was the spline count that the 2wd shaft will have to match your 205. I don't know if they were 27 or 32 splines in the 2wd th400s.

should be 32 spline.. the 2wd short shaft TH400 I had for my D20 was 32 spline

arggggggg i wish you hadnt have told me that.anyway ive got no time right now to do this my self.as long as its guaranteed for a yr im ok with the 900.
the 3 things ive always hated about working on my own projects are.

auto trans
exhaust
radiator

ive never had much luck with any of these 3.oh well my xmas present comes early this yr. smile.gif

are you guys sure?i just calld a few tranny places on the net and they all say this cant be done.the 4wd assemblw was unique to 4wd only.ive got an 2wd chevy 3500 truch trans here with a tailshaft for the big yoke(2wd)its a t 400.

If you want to know if it will work measure how far the output shaft sticks out of the trans and count the splines on both transsmissions if they are both equal it will swap, otherwise I havent seen any good solid information on whether or not the 2wd short th-400, D20 Th-400, And early NP205 th400 all used the same output shaft. Was the length of the th400 205 output shaft changed in 80 when they switched to the round patern adapter and the long 32 spline input gear in the np205?

I swapped in a 2wd short shaft TH400 tailshaft into my QT TH400 for the D20.... it works....

the 205 uses a sleeve between the transfer case and the trans that is why all you need is the sleeve and the adapter for what ever trans you want to run you dont have to change anything in the transfer case and $900.00 i could of flown out there and back and a year warr ....what is that 6000 miles ??? i also know a dude that has a cool video out now on the th400 cost like spare change and the dude does it in shorts and opentoed sandels

I am not questioning whether or not the D20 and short 2wd shafts are the same or not, and I dont know about the NP205. I should have stated in my first post I that I didnt know if they were the same or not, i just aSSumed that he wanted to know how easy it was to switch output shafts. There have been other threads about this and no one had ever actualy comfirmed that the 205 was the same by putting the parts together from what I have seen.

BTW The NP205 doesnt use a sleave when bolted behind a Th400. http://www.bowtiecrawler.com/NP205.html

i dont like anyone but me touching my rig.i hate when something is out of my control.

i hope this shows.its a pic of the rear of mt 205 adapter and the trans that blew. http://us.f1.yahoofs.com/users/a99b8889/bc/recent+pix/__sr_/205+adapter.jpg?bckuas_Auu_bLJ5Q

what do you think this rebuild shold have cost?

its not a stock rebuild(but they will be hopefully using some of the good stuff already in it)

they towed it about 25 miles(only because i didnt want to damage it any more)

they are taking it out and putting it back in.

the converter is not just a stock one and they will put the same back in(i paid 220 for it originally.

it guaranteed for 12 mos.

its 900 even ,no tax if i pay cash.

they wanted 600 if i brought it in thats with a new(rebuilt)converter.but the guarantee was only 6 mos.

the first on the left is the 32 spline th400 and the 2 on the right can be used with the correct sleeve

well you guys were right.looks like the 2wd shortshaft trans would have worked
trans guy called me today and said that the converter was the culprit.it was a t350 converter for a corvette.the welded new tabs on it to make it work with the 400.i remember he told me this when he 1st built it.he claimed it would give me a higher stall and it would hold up fine.he also said he would back it 100% .........but that was before he died.

anyway the trans guy said that he would not give me the 12 mo guarantee unless i sprung for a new allison(?????)converter.
so there goes another 100 bringing the total to 1000.000
i could have used the 2wd 400 here for nothing!anyways that grand was getting kinda heavy to carry around anyway!

Sorry to hear that :( . If you have another $1000 sitting around that is getting heavy let me know and I will send you my address. Can't you stop him from doing the work and then go with the original idea?

So let me get this straight; when I pull the extension-housing off my short-shaft BOP 2wd TH400 tranny, it's going to bolt straight to the round-pattern NP205 adapter???

Cool... smile.gif

mark

no you have to buy a new trans first......and then figure that out.LOL
