My 1981 4 dour cherokee, stock 360 runs horribly in cold weather until it gets warmed up then it runs like a top. This process can take from 20 to 30 minutes. I have put a rebuilt carburator on it. Can I make some adjustments so it will not take so long for it to run smoothly. During the waiting period it billows smoke and runs really rough. If I don't keep gas applied it will choke out. Oddly enough if I gear down to L2 when I come to a stop this helps it from choking out so badly. What's up with that? We have tried adjusting the dashpot (and put new one on) in front of the throttle arm and also the idol speed but still not any better. Please help me!!!!!

Lean out the automatic choke, I just did this, Mine was doing the same thing as you describe. Pass side of carb there the choke set up. Black thing on the side of carb, held in place with 3 screws, loosen the screws and turn it clockwise to lean it out. I set the choke as follows, Cold start idles fo about 3 minutes lean choke to start to open at this point and 5 minutes opens all the way. My guess is the choke is not opening for you.

Definitely sounds like the choke isn't opening. How long does it take for the engine to reach normal operating temperature? Is the thermostat stuck open making it take forever to warm up and in turn not letting the choke come off? Just a thought...
