View Full Version : New tires won't stay balanced

I put 35" MTRs on my J10 less than two weeks ago. After about four days and less than a hundred miles, the front end has got a shimmy at 50-60 mph. I went back to Discount Tire and they re-balanced (computer spun) the tires. They were out of balance. I did hear the "Tech" say also that he was chasing weights. Today my front end shimmies again. The wheels/tires were balanced with weights on both sides of the rim.
I got some factory rims (jeep 15x8 steel spokes)from the boneyard that I made "pretty" for the new tires. I looked them over and they did not have any dings or bends, etc.
When I put these same type tires on my CJ, and a much lighter vehicle I might add, never had any problems. However, I mounted them on brand new rock crawlers.
I have gas shocks with less 5000 miles on them and I did not have a shimmy with my previous tires.
My questions are: What could be causing the tires to go out of balance. Even if the boneyard rims look straight, could they be unbalanceable(< new word)?

Tires may have a separation in the belts going on... you may want to check them.... any low speed wobbles going on?
What tire pressure you at?

Are you throwing weights maybe? I would count the weights after they put new ones on again, then when it shimmies, count the weights again.
I would do what todd said baout checking for seperation.

Tire pressure is at 32 pounds.
I don't see any separation anywhere.

If there appears to be nothing wrong with the tires, i would think that you are throwing the wieghts, or they are actually sliding around on the rims, been there b-4, I switched to the adhesive backed wieghts on the j-20 and solved the problem for me, might want to give that a shot on yours and see if that helps.

I agree with Bigun, I would think they might be out of round. Had that problem on the rear of my wrangler. Tried a couple diffrent shops untill one told me that they were out of round. Cost me $18 a tire to fix them, but no more shakes or vibes.

Exactly how did they determine they were out of round? and what did they do to fix them?

I am not sure how they determine if they are out of round but i know they have to grind them ? to bruing them in round . But since yours are only two weeks old I would expect them to still be under warrenty

The guy that fixed them showed me when it was spining on the balancer and you could just see a little movement in it. Like he told me, "you can balance a square tire, but that doesnt mean it will ride smooth" To fix it he used a special machine that spun the tire at a slow speed and had a round blade that went back and fourth across the tread and slowly removed rubber from the high side untill it was round. Just call a few local shops and ask them if they have a trueing machine and could fix a tire that is out of round. Judgeing from the fact that that IS your problem. If you find a shop that can fix a out of round tire then take it to them and have them check your tires, as they would be able to tell if they were out or not a little better than a shop that cant fix it. Good luck.
