Has anyone filled in the rear quarter windows on a GW, to make a sort-of 4-door panel delivery? My brother and I were kicking ideas for my gw around over lunch today. we both have always been real fond of the old suburban and IH panel trucks our dad used to drive and thought that maybe a panel version of the waggy might work. anybody ever done one or posted pictures of anything similar?

Actually I've been kicking around the same thing myself, but I reall don't want so it to my 91. Biggest problem I see is the chrome around the window itself, whether or not you leave it, it'll look goofy I think. No window and chrome surrounding nothing, or no chrome but then the rest of the chrome on that plane just stops. SO then have to remove the rest of the chrome on the beltline, now it'll look real goofy.

Andy I know that, but what If I WANT a 4-dr version. I know that AMC didnt make'em, I'm just trying to find out if anyone else has done or considered doing this. looks like this group have been a reound for quite a while and I doubt there are very many undiscovered wheels to be found.

JF93, IF---I were to do it, I'd be dechroming all around the glass anyway, I was looking at the "Caterpiller" (pics in that Yellow'n black FSJ thread) and it started as a GW and looks really good minus the excess chrome and wood trim. I don't need anywhere that much lift or rubber.
I was thinking along the lines of removing the rear quarter glass and trim and welding in sheet metal panels. that'd probably be the easiest part. It'd take some study and planning to get the panel right but redoing the interior would be more complex I imagine

I like the visability from the windows.

I'd graft on a brow also. :)

Porkchop did that on his Red Rhino.

might pop out a 1/4 window and use it as a pattern to make a panel, then reinstall in place of the glass using the w/strip just to see if you like it. Won't make any permanent changes, but you would get an idea of what it would do for you.

did a google search on "red Rhino" and found his old website with the pics. I think it looks real cool particularly the later pics with the rear quarters filled in and the rhino-ized front. wish there were some that show stages in the process, maybe some more searching is in order
I've been driving a utility van for a bunch of years so I'm used to no rearquarter vision. I go to a lot of single shot rifle and trad archery matches as well as hunting and I like the idea of having the back storage area a bit more visually private, Just ultra dark tinting the glass won't cut it, maybe for the rear seat pax windows and back glass but not the rear quarters.

i dunno...i tinted the hardtop windows on my TJ...and it's really dark. even going nose to the glass doesn't allow one to see much.

i may need brighter back-up lights. fortunately most places i go i can do "pull-through" parking.

I found his "home page" Here. It appears to be old and from what I've read so far he sold the Red Rhino some time back

this is the google return I got. I have NOT checked on all the sites indicted so I'm NOT taking any responsability for what you may hit on when you click on'em

I'd graft on a brow also. :) Woah now, you just cain't go off half cocked on this. Wide Track flares and axles go with the brow ya know. :D ;)

I also like to be able to see out the back. Tint is a good thing too.

To get the "panel look" I think I'd fill the fixed part of the window in the rear door as well.

Now thats taking it one step too far for me. I pull a camper to my shooting matches and hitching up a trailer w/o a back window would be too much hassle and I ain't about to put a backup vidio camera like the big RVs have in a waggy.

I tried a crude photochop of filling in the back panel and I think once its de-wooded and de-chromed it'll look pretty good at least to my taste.

now I just gotta get it home and start all the different "improvements I have in mind

Pretty sure Krek means the second row doors, not the tailgate. The seperate peice of glass that you can't roll down. If you look at the picture of "Red Rhino" its the small rectangular glass peice just infront of the panel he "deleted" on his waggy.

since you're wanting to do that, why not buy the Panel door rear chop that is for sale here? (in For Sale).

Some retard said, "Nice Van!" :banghead: http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q155/sgnellett/smilies/nuts.gif

The stripes are pretty cool, and I kinda like the semi blacked out look, but retaining some chrome, but the wheels and the stance just sucks! http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q155/sgnellett/smilies/suicide.gif

But, if it really has a 472 Hemi in it, I might ned to be that low to keep it from blowing over!:drivin:

I'm trying hard to think of something nice to say, but with out being taken for a bigoted old grouch it sorta makes me wish I hadn't started this thread. 'bout the best I can come up with is "not my cuppa tea"

I don't like all the big tires and wheel either, I lean more towards
old school. but I just thought I'd post it for the thread!

Those two "slamed" FSJs are ok, the one in the drawing would be a cool old school retro type thing. :)

The one that is made from a photo shop program, would not be too bad, take away those stupid large wheels,:p really tub out the rear, slap that Hemi in it and let it scream dowm the 1/4 mile while lifting the front end off the line, now that would make it real kewl!:D

only if you were into necrophilia:eek:
All you'd need to do is Photoshop Elvira into the drawing.

The only reason I could see for deleting the rear quarter glass would be if I wanted to keep cargo from prying eyes, which would mean tinting the rear glass as well.

While "panalizing" a Wagoneer may seem like a cute idea, and the one in the pic posted above is a definite head-turner, I revel in the visibility the fenestration of my Wagoneer affords me.

Before getting too carried away with this one it might be a good idea to compare wheelbases with actual hearses. I think you'd find the competition to be stiff.

It could also afford one the space to advertise one's business... which could be done against a tinted window as well but would be infinitely cooler on a panel in my opinion.

Yep- it's a great place to advertize one's business.
I didn't cover or tint the quarter windows on my Wagoneer, but I do have my business name on them in "etchlite" vinyl, which looks just like etched glass. This is my more conservative, classy company car.
http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee184/TonkaJ200/WaggyWindow.jpg

On my XJ Cherokee, I covered the quarter windows with a red vinyl that is a pretty close match to the paint and made some interior panels to cover the inside that are covered in grey headliner material that matches the rest of the interior. I did this to get the ad space, but also to make it hard to see all the CRAP I carry in this truck all the time. It's got all of my sign installation tools in it. It looks cool, but the big blind spots can be a pain sometimes (like bacing out of a parking space). With the bright colors and subtle flames on the side, this is the opposite of my Waggy!

http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee184/TonkaJ200/CherokeePanel.jpg

My '63 Panel will also get some lettering on it when I get it finished. But I might do some big magnetic panels that fit exactly in the flat sides and have them painted at the same time I do the body. This way I can do several different designs and change them around when I want to, or travel in cognito (sp?) when I want to. You want to talk about blind spots, this one's got some BIG ones.

I like the retro look, and I had thought about doing a big rag slider like this on a Waggy, if/when I ever find one worthy of it!
