View Full Version : Putting a 401ci with a TF727 Tranny.. Does it work??

Quesion for the all-knowing:
If I replace my 360ci with a 401ci in my 1988 GW, will it work with my existing TF727 transmission and NP229 transfer case?
Is it as simple as pulling the 360 and putting in the 401???
Please give as detailed of an answer if possible, because I am going to talk to the guys at the rebuilding shop and you know how the price goes up if they think you don't know anything....
I'm positive that I will have to pay more for the core because of getting a 401 and giving a 360 core, but if it can be done, that is fine...
Thanks again...

Alli did it!
Yep... a total drop in.. only thing you'll need different is the 401 Flywheel.. err.. Flexplate.

no but really what is the thing about the thin bushing in the back of the crank i don;t know if you take it out for the 727 or 400 ?but there is something with the crank or the converter will not firt right and you'll wind up busting the front pump...anyonme remember that ?

Actually, it's a Green Widget, not the blue one that comes from the 1952 Edsel that seals the crank knobs from leaking franze lube all over the potatoe shim...
I remember that from Shop Class!

Ironroad29 is right on with his bushing idea. Since the 401 you are getting more than likely was mated to a TH400 you will need to remove the torque converter pilot bushing from the end of the crank shaft. If you don't do this the 727's converter will not fit and will cause the pump to burn up on the tranny. Most of the motor's I have delt with, the bushing will come out with a little coaxing.

You'll either need a hybrid flexplate to mate with the '88's lightweight Mitsubishi starter (American Performance sells these balanced for the 401, I think), or revert to the 150lb Ford starter and wiring.
