What all is involved and will it hold up? Plans for the W/T when it comes home is a 6" BJs, 1" BJ's shackle and a 1.5" block runnin 35" tires. I dont do real crazy 4 wheelin, just hittin the trails and mud holes on the weekends. Gettin kinda tired of the Q/T, I like the case but too much to maintain and dont like the vacuum switch thing and kinda want a part time case for the wheelin rig. Both the rigs are '79s.

To do it...

heres what you need

1. th400/np208 adapter housing and a 32spline short shaft tailshaft(or what ever comes with the th400/208 you can find.

2. jbconversions custom 32spline input shaft for the d300

3. custom cross member

4. some have used a clocking ring(i did not)

you have to tear the th400 apart(most rebuild it at the same time) put the gm 32spline input shaft in the end of the tranny. then mate the 208 adapter housing to the th400, then mate the d300 to the 208, with a clocking ring you can use all the bolts without the clocking ring you can leave one bolt out and run it.

nice this about the dana 300 also is that if you have 3.31 or 3.55 or 3.73 gearing in your axles, instead of regearing the axles, you can spend half the money and get a 4:1 kit for the dana 300. the j20 axles that i just swapped into my j10 have 3.73 gears and all i'm going to do is install a 4:1 kit in the dana 300 and call it a day.

Don't forget the AMC TH400 tranny is clocked about 4 degrees to the passenger side. You have to fab a tranny mount for the crossmember with 4 degrees built into it or the 208 adapter won't sit right. I used a 4 degree axle shim to correct this. Oh, and use the SHORT 208 adapter or the 300 will go through the floor when you try to mount it up!
Good luck!

yes, i wish i had known about the 4 degree tip to it. my left bolt has a big gap in it:) i will end up either using a shim or redoing my crossemember like i did this one but put the tilt in it.

ah...Im not takin the th400 apart again, just had it rebuilt...is there any t-case swap that doesnt involve swapping tailshafts or needing adapters???

the Q/T is pretty much junk, huge amount of slack in the chain, clunks like crazy, and wobbles real bad in tight turns. Probably low on fluid most its life too...but hey, if I find somthin better you can have it.

another QT case......the 10 spline is hard to match unless you can get a 10 spline input shaft.

i think that my TH400 is clocked more than 4* too. i threw a magnetic protractor on it and i think it said about 10*.
