Got a chance to go drive on the beach for a little while last week. Hadn't been driving on the beach since the spring. Weather was cool elsewhere, but hot on the beach, could have gone tanning. Anyways, pics:

Looks like a desert, actually it almost is, very hot and dry for a coastal area.

I thought those plants looked kinda cool just sitting in the sand together

Ya see, there's New York and then there's New York. Whole 'nother world out there past Manhattan.

interesting how rocky the sand out there is. ours are much longer too.

here's my favorite beach, and one of oregon's haystack rocks.

and for those in doubt, the colors were not minipulated in any way. it was just a very cold sunset (in february).

I miss the beach, especially on the east coast. I spent a lot of summers in Long Island. We have lakes here, but its not the same. Awesome pics

some aussie beach pics - sorry, no jeeps - from cactus beach. this is a well known (in surfing circles) remote spot on the far west coast of south australia. consisting of 3 breaks, cactus, castles & caves, this spot is famous for its surf & also great white sharks, however since it is so very remote, only a dedicated local crew reside in the dunes there. recently a couple from new zealand were honeymooning there - the new husband went out for an early morning surf while his bride sat back in the dunes to watch & he never returned...in one piece anyway. a family friend ("sharkey") was fatally taken there many years ago too - in what was his second shark attack. spent many school holiday summer christmas breaks out there....if youre ever passing through, get there!

1. dunes & salt water lake
2. view of cactus from castles/caves
3. sunset from the point at cactus

Went to the beach with my friend Adrianne today, took a few pics so I figured I'd tack them onto this post. Perhaps I'll just make this an ongoing thread to add onto whenever I get some nice pics from the beach. Anyways we went for a drive to the beach because the beach is cool and to listen to Porcupine Tree on the Jeep's nice stereo. The sands shift around in the fall and winter and the scuttled ships were exposed more than any other time I've seen them, so that was pretty cool.

I don't think this thing is seaworthy anymore...

Apparently this old mid-late 1800's ship had a propeler, the big orange part is maybe a driveshaft from a long gone steam engine or something? We walked, or crawled almost, along the remnants of the hullsides to get a good view of the it and I still don't know what I'm looking at. Anyone know about shipbuilding?

Sweet pix! That orange piece looks to be part of the crankshaft like part they used back then to connect the boiler(s) to the prop. Could be wrong tho. Is that thing brass?

Dan, where on the Island is that? North Shore or South? I've done some time in the Hamptons after college (went to school in NYC), had friends with places out in Amagansett and had some relatives in Smithtown. I have friends in various places from Manhassett to Massapequa to Huntington.

North shore, south shore is usually nice and sandy rather than rocky and the dunes don't get as tall as the glacially created bluffs are. it's right by my house, Baiting Hollow/Calverton, directly north of Riverhead actually.

Is that where they filmed Goonies? Looks familiar. oregon has like 7 haystack rocks that look very similar. this one is at pacific city and goonies was filmed in astoria, the northern edge of oregon.

goonies is one of my all time favorite movies though. truffle shuffle!!
