I don't know the width between the pads but you will need to cut them off and move them. NT Wags are a lot wider than CJ's. The front/rear track width of an 82 CJ5 is 52.4"/50.5" compared to a NT's 59.4"/57.8"
All 79 and earlier FSJ's have the front diff on the pass side but all the rears are at least somewhat offset to the pass side also. In 80 the front switched to drivers side diffs and centered rears.

IMHO the best swap for a CJ, least work....Bang for the buck! Is the Scout 44 F/R...They are 1" or so (don't quote me on that) wider than a wide track CJ...The pumpkin correct...Waggy wrong side...You cna move your front springs outboard of the frame, or grind and weld the mount to the pumpkin. There is a company that makes the Castor correctors for hte Scout 44's wich eliminates the need to cut&twist to add caster. If you need that link let me know, I think they are like $40 or so.. Just my $.02...I have not done this swap, but have considered it quite a bit. I was looking for a good deal on a set of Scout axles, and have since decided to sell my CJ. Good luck

Castor corrector link (http://www.cafes.net/epp/TSRhomepage.htm)

Here is the link, I talked to a few of the scout guys around here, none of them had tried them yet but thought they should work great.
