I am looking at a base (like on options base, plain Jane as I have ever seen) Cherokee and wondering what the std. and optional gears were offerred, for a 258-3sp-d20 setup. From looking at the truck I don't think any option boxes were checked so I would assume the std. ratio for now.

I know my 77 J-10 had 4.10's but I don't know if that was opt. or std.

ive seen a few people claim that 4.10s were optional with the 258 in the 70s, but ive never seen anything from amc that supports that. in 77 im pretty sure standard was 3.07 and optional was 3.54.

Oh, Boy 3.07's + 30 year old 258, That should make for some interesting freeway on-ramp fun

I remember my 77 258-t18-d20 J-10 had 4.10's with trak-lock rear, but it was a J-10 not a Cherokee/Wagoneer, I wish I remembered what the
build sheet said, I assume the 4.10's was tied to the trak-lock option (??)

cherokees and wagoneers only came with 3.07's or 3.54's in the 70's.

Oh and for J10's, only 258's came option with 4.10's afaik. Trac-loc was available with 3.54's as well. Generally only J20's came standard with 3.73's or 4.10's.

Mike, according to the 77 AMC TSM:

Cheros model 16, 17 and 18(49 state rigs) w/258 got std gears of 3.54's and optional 4.09's.

The same rigs with 360/401's were different: Chero model 16, 18 w/V8 got 3.07's period.

The model 17 Chero w/360 or 401 came std w/3.54's but had a 4.09 option.

I hope you are right Joe, I would just hate to think of 3.07's and a tried 258, that would be scarry !

That's what AMC says came in AMC 77 Cheros Mike.
Even AMC in their later wheezing hooked to oxygen bottles days(cheap French Renault oxy too) they still had a soft spot for the weaker nippled motors. Even my 82 CJ w/Iron Puke 4 banger got 3.54 gears where the 258's got 2.73's. Was prolly just so they could get the daym things off the assembly line w/o a tow.

Yeah a 30 year old tired 258 with 3.07 gears (throw in an AT too for pain) would be enough to make a guy start doing drugs again. Why not? Ya got time...rig's not going anywhere remotely fast. :(

Good luck with your find Mike. The Plain Jane's are the good ones.

I would guess 3.54s..seems to be the most common on all the 70's FSJs Ive seen

He decided not to sell, or at least not to me :(
I asked for a few more pictures, and he backed away, price seemed OK,
if it checked out.

So the search goes on, the last one I was looking at, had no paper work but he said he was working on it, and then sold it to a overseas buyer.

The joys of looking for a streight rust free un hacked FSJ.
