View Full Version : Bogging down and pinging...

My GW has started bogging down if I hit the go pedal too fast, it's OK if I ease into it. Haven't really noticed any other symptoms. Where should I start, I've checked the timing(set at 10+/-) and vacuum(21") so far.
It also has a little pinging under load, which way should I move the timing to get rid of that? EGR is only 6 months old, so I think it's OK.
Thanks for the help,
David

Your base timing might be fine, but you may need to adjust the vacuum advance. I have a similar problem to diagnose this weekend, and understand that there is a 1/8 allen head adjustment in the vacuum advance nipple.
I believe it is clockwise to advance and counter for retarding the timing.

Thanks, I'll check it out, should I advance or retard the timing to get rid of pinging.

My 318 did the same thing and it was the egr bad. I unhooked and blacked the vacuum lines and it ran fine.

David,
You will want to retard the timing to get rid of the ping (pre ignition of the fuel).
I have an adjustable digital timing light that I am hoping will give me accurate reads at various rpms. Once I know where things are at timing wise over the multiple r's someone here can tell me where the optimum is and how to get there.
I have also seen where the weights in the distributor that work with the advance spring can stick and give you too advanced a timing for a given rpm. I need to figure this out more to be of any help to you.

Hi David....do the new FSJs have a carb with an accelerator pump??.....or squirters??...could be a bad pump.............. ......ds..

Don, I think it does, that's the small rubber plunger, right. I rebuilt the carb about a year ago. Maybe it's time to dig into again.

David...With older cars I would suspect the pump 'cause when you punch it you will almost die....If you start of very gently it doesn't make but alittle differents. With your "new" one the other postings could also be the real solution. ...I'm just trying give you another thought.......good luck............. ;) .....ds..

The first that came to mind when I read your post was accelerator pump. Take your air cleaner off and with the choke open look down the venturis with a flashlight. Pump the throttle a few times (ENGINE OFF) and you should see a squirt of fuel come out. If the engine is warm you will see some vapor come out of the venturis.
You can also retard the timing to get rid of the pinging. Has it been pinging for awhile? Sometimes you can get a bad tank of gas that will cause preignition.

Thanks Don and Greenchero, I'll check the pump this weekend.
Yes, it has been pinging for awhile, not bad just enough to notice it when I put a load on it. The bogging problem is new.
