if you pull the diff cover you can count the ring gear teeth and divide that by the amount of pinion teeth and come up with a number close to what ratio you have.
not sure where i heard that though, so it might not work. mmmmmmm can anyone else back me up on this?

if u go to www.accuautoparts.com (http://www.accuautoparts.com) they have a calculator on there that will calculate everything for u just count the teeth on the pinion and on the ring gear put it in and it adds it up for u

That's one way to do it. But the tag bolted to the diff cover should already have those counts stamped on it. For example, you might find "46 13" on the tag. Divide those numbers and you'll get 3.54.
So try the diff cover first. Then to verify, jack up the rear axle so that both tires are off the ground. Spin the driveshaft and count how many times you have to rotate it to get the tires to spin once. If it's about three and three quarters, you have 3.73 gears. If it's just over 4 rotations, you have 4.09's. About three and a half, you have 3.54's. If it's about four and a quarter, you have 4.27's. etc.

Most (all?) Dana ring gears hve the tooth count stamped into the edge. Easier than counting teeth. Divide the larger number by the smaller.
Everybody seems to have trouble with comparing wheel rotations to driveshaft rotations. Remember that the differential divides the power between the rear wheels, so if you have an open differential, hold one wheel and turn the other, and the number of turns will be half the gear ratio.
