My 79 Cherokee Chief had the large round Chief emblems on the back of the front fenders. All the rest of the Chiefs that I see have the emblems behind the rear glass. I know that mine has been repainted, so I have always assumed that they were moved after the paint..
Then, I noticed this other 79 that someone posted from a craigslist post.. It also has the emblems behind the fenders.. Was this a 79 only thing?

On a 'true' '79 Cherokee Chief the round emblems are on the fenders and the 4 Wheel Drive logo is behind the rear glass.

Do you have an image of the 4 Wheel Drive logo? Mine did not come with that.

Robert, I've seen them both ways. A lot of it depends on the options of the vehicle, and what graphics "package" it had. My GE Cherk didn't have the indian head badge at all, even tho it was a WT and met the requirement of the Chief badge. I "installed" it myself, on the rear pillar.
To each his own, I say put it where you want it.

The rig will look cleaner and be easier to detail without them....Less cracks and crevices for the crud to hide--- will pm mailing addy on request:D :D :D The "4 wheel drive" logos are double back tape, chrome pieces. On my 81 they are in the filler behind the 1/4 glass. About 3/4 inch tall and about 4-5 inches long, IIRC since I am not looking at the old beast right now. I have the one on the glove box but not the outside ones. Got some, just waiting to do the body work and pait before they go on. Will be placing them on the 1/4's above the 4 wheel drive logos.

lindel, your golden eagle didnt have the "S" badge because with the golden eagle package it was included. who cares about an indian head when you got a giant gold bird on your hood .
on 74 cherokees they had a rectangular "s" badge not an indian "s" badge. 74-78 had the indian head behind the rear glass. 79-83 had the indian head behind the front flare. but with that being said i've never seen a 79-83 with a stock indian head behind the rear glass. and BTW the "S" indian badge only meant it had the sport package it does not mean it is a chief.

See...I understand why a Golden Eagle wouldn't have Chief emblems...but why does my Golden Eagle have the little chief emblem on the glovebox then?
AMC makes no sense.

That 4 wheel drive emblem looks just like the one that Jeep used on XJ's and ZJ's..
As far as your GE having a Chief emblem on the dash.. Weird.. I dont know why it would.. A GE was a GE, and a Chief was a Chief.. And, with that said.. Not all Chiefs were "S" models.. I have seen Chief emblems that did not have the "S" on it..
Actually, does the one on your glove box have the "S" on it? If not, maybe the Chief was a symbol of the W/Ts, and the "S" and GE were just Chief trim packages.. Were there any W/T Laredo's?
Just thinking out loud..

Yes. The Laredo package did away with the GE package and it was the highest options package available. This package only started arround '80-'81.
IIRC XJ's and ZJ's only ever got the 4X4 logo like the 87+ GW's had. Maybe some pre-86 XJ's had the 4 Wheel Drive Logo. I guess it was a Chrysler vs. AMC thing:rolleyes:

Rather than looking at the emblem as "chief", look at it as strictly as an Indian head logo, symbolizing "Cherokee", and the letter "s" as the trim level, since not all Cherokees were chief packages.
I think that might hit closer to the mark.

and yes i know the print is small. but again the only way a chief was a chief was if it said cherokee chief on the body.

True enough, but, it did meet all the requirements to be a chief (save for the script).
It was also a Levi's Edition (albeit with an almond color of denim) even though the "levi's" only lasted a few years (the fabric that is).
Jeep's ideas about badging are amusing at best. It seems it was whatever the guy that did the badges felt like doing that day...

IIRC, base Cherokee's did not any large emblem. That came with the Sport package (hence the emblem having an S on it). The Cherokee Chief package includes the equipment found on the Sport models, so it also came with the lage S indian head badge. Golden Eagles and Laredo's should only have the small non S indian head badge.

The indian head could come on both w/t and n/t cherokees.

I am still liking this theory.. It seems to make sense...
Also, I have been told that "S" does not mean Sport.. Instead, it only means it has the "S" package..

as far as i know all chief bages had the 'S' on the bottom. confusing, but there is no such thing as a chief 's' model becase the chief was above the 's' model.
back to the placement issue, here is my chief just after i bought it. chief head on the front quarter panel, and 4-wheel drive behind the rear glass.

The "S" package is the Sport package.

'Sides, a real man (or woman) puts his emblems where he wants them...
