It was a little late when we got home, but I got the second good coat on it today and took a couple of almost twilight pics...
After the first good coat:

It's certainly coming along... there are a couple of spots that I'll need to take a look at later... but heck, I can just sand them down and reroll them at my leisure... just one of the advantages.
The lower quarters aren't painted because I'm going to do them in black, along with the top... though I'm kind of changing my mind about the lower quarters.
It's a lot of work... but that just makes me take that much more PRIDE in it.

Don't know... lol... it was cloudy and getting dark... it is darker than the original pics because I "enhanced" them before I uploaded them and it made them seem lighter. It's got a lot of gold in it... kind of like road stripes or road signs... I like it.

Thanks guys... I appreciate it...
I've got about $30 in it... three quarts of paint at around $7.00 a quart and a few foam rollers. I actually got the paint for $3.50 a quart, so my actual cost is maybe $20.
If I had primed it first I'd be really close to being finished now... as it is it will take a couple more coats. I AM going to wetsand it and put a final coat, but I'm really just trying to get it ready to take to a Fall Festival this weekend... the wife wants to take it... lol.

I've used this paint on lawn and garden tractors I've restored and I know it holds up great... 'cause they stay out in the weather some... we'll see... the best part is that I can just touch it up without having to worry about paying someone to do it or worrying about my shop teacher letting me back into the trade school even though I'm not a student anymore... or renting a booth... ;)

This is more what I was thinking... and I could just do the top in non-thinned black paint 'cause it won't matter as much about whether it lays down, etc. Heck, I don't even have to do the whole top, just around the sides... I'm 6-2 and I can't begin to see the top of it, lol. And I DO plan on tinting the windows... but I'm waiting on the fronts 'til I get new wipes installed... I bought a quart of black last night to do the lowers and the areas around the wheelwells... though, again, I kind of like the all yellow too.
Thanks for showing me this... both, actually, because I had also thought of doing the whole top in black... but that makes it look like a J10 with a camper on it.

Looks real good. You can really see the coats filling it in and making it look smooth as glass. Rollers really do work well huh? ;)
Dirtball
10-04-2007, 05:48 PM
It's really smooth except for where I let it run. It's not smooth like a spray on, now... it's not show car... it has the least little orange peal look and feel to it. That's why, after the last good fill in coat (good term) I'm going to let it dry for a couple of weeks then sand it down. I need to sand a little around some bondo too... I'm in too much of a hurry cause my wife and daughter want to take it somewhere this weekend and I'm trying to make them happy.
Thanks again for the good words...

Would love a paragraph on what you did to prep. Thanks!
The implement paint sticks so well that I just roughed up my paint and laid it on. I did my bondo work and everything beforehand, of course. I didn't put down a layer of primer, and that is one of the things I would do over (along with taking more time to sand the body filler). I would now roll on a layer of primer then sand it down smooth before applying my first coat. I mixed my paint (Rustoleum Old Caterpillar Yellow) 4 to 1 paint to MINERAL SPIRITS. The original article said to mix it 3-2, but that was way too thin for me. And use the white foam rollers, not the rag kind.

I bought a bunch of the cheap foam paint brushes to do the trim work... the foam works MUCH better than a regular brush for this application... I learned that the hard way :banghead: .

It's funny... we saw an old Chevy panel truck today and my wife thought it was cool... but... NO WAY MAN!!!!
I'm going with the black top and lowers with a thin (3/4 inch) blacks stripe along the crease about halfway down that angles up to the front of the hood on the front fenders... then probably let the stripe go across the very front of the hood and connect on the other front fender... I have a paint program, but I'm not good with it or I'd put in a pic of my idea...

I thought I mentioned it in another thread on this... I've certainly thought it several times (that I don't want to copy it). That's one of the reasons I've been looking for some different color combos... or different use of the black, like the stripe down the side (middle of the beltline) and then going across the front of the hood.

leave the rockers yellow, otherwise the rig seems to 'fall off' into the shadow, and you lose the shape of the rig. i don't like that.
are you wanting to use black as an accent color or are you shooting for a 2-tone paint job? IMO, you need to have less drastic colors if you are going for 2-tone like some of your pics with the rockers covered and around the fenders.

I've had this thought too... don't break up the yellow... then I see just HOW yellow it is and I think that I need something to break up the yellow.
When you get started on yours just, please, prime it and be more patient than I was... I have more runs than it looks like I do... and that's because I just got in too big a hurry to get it ready to take to the fall festival where we usually buy lots of arts and crafts and plants and, thus, need the truck... that I couldn't take anyway because of the squealing coming from the left front. I never took the time to sand between coats, so I still have a lot of work to do after it cools off some (supposed to be 89 with high humidity today). Think about it... as good as you think mine looks yours will be THAT MUCH better... and that is a VERY good thing!!

what are you doing for a front bumper?
Dirtball
10-08-2007, 07:08 AM
My front one is in really good shape... but my rear one is totally kaput... the bolts were pulling out through it.
I'm going to get some scrap and make bumpers, I hope... I certainly don't have the money to buy nice looking ones. My neighbor makes "dozer" styple ones for $250 with D rings attached, and I'd love to do that... but funds are really short after the lift and tires.
JeepsNGuns is going to help me make bumpers after I get the scrap. If I had a nice rear one I'd just put the original bumpers back on it for the time being.
Any suggestions?

i just used 5" "C" channel and was done with it. you could probably cut the ends to follow the body lines a little seeing that its not as squared as mine. cost me $100 for the front, rear,4 mounting brackets, cutting wheel, primer and paint.

That's what I'm looking to find in the junkyard... or some really heavy pipe... my front brackets will ALMOST work with C channel just like they are... they are very close to 90 degrees to each other.
I'll look for a good rear bumper for the time being I guess... there was one on Ebay recently that was $20 'til the last hour, when it went close to $100 IIRC... too much for me...

robert, i was thinking about making the stripe hashed similar to yours on my rendition, but in the rear so it 'fades out' so to speak. i'm digin your version tho, if he tinted the rear window dark it'd look like one big window. but i still don't like rocker paint, haha.
scantar, laredo stripes would look good, for sure!

Man I appreciate you sharing that with me... I think that means more than all of the adults put together. My 10-year-old did her best to talk me into orange, but she's tickled with the yellow. Something about kids' honesty, I think...

Orange, with black stripes, you'd HAVE to name it Tony
I'm having the rockers and lower rear quarters replaced by a body shop down in TN (shop rates are about half what they are up here) on my 87gw before I bring her home. there are only a couple very small perfs but I'm having the whole lower 1/4s and rocker skins replaced just to be sure.
Its white, but I'm having the rockers and lowest part of the rear quarters covered with the black "good grade" bedliner material rather than paint.
A: its a whole lot cheaper than having them get a custom mix to match the old paint
B: it'll save on stone chips etc.
I hope.
anybody else try the bedliner stuff in this type of application?
eventually I'll de-woody it and dechrome around the windows and maybe do some more black trimming on it.

leave it, just ditch that stupid grill/headlights. Put a black razor on it and call it done. Looks good with the yellow and nothing else.

When I say "paint" I really mean bedliner... at least on the rockers and anything else down low that I do in black... it'll help in several ways, including some lazy bodywork coverup.

I agree bedline the rockers it will help to protect it from small rocks. If I was going to actually paint my rig I would do the same but all it has in its future is black epoxy primer.
Thinking about it I might Bed linner the whole thing. Hmmm The possibilities.

Yep, I used bedliner on my rockers and fenders up to the body line. It stands out against the white quite well. This pic is before I relocated the bumpers and got the 31" BFG's. I redid the exaust too recently so it dosen't hang quite as low as it did in this pic...Lots louder now with the Cherry Bomb!

That looks sharp... and should contrast nicely with my yellow when I get around to doing it.

That is one fine lookin Cherk Dirtball. I love that black on yellow. The black pignose really sets it off. I think I'm going to roll mine too. Not yellow, it prolly wouldn't look as good on a wag. A little like a school bus as someone mentioned. (...to me anyway.) Can you take a really close-up pic to show how much texture you ended up with in the paint? How did you paint the grill?

Many thanks... I'll try to get a closeup this weekend... I promised someone else in PMs that I'd do that, but we've been getting home late, and with the sun going down earlier it's been tough; that, and the wheel bearings I've been repacking.
I'll tell you that it has a smooth orange peel texture... and that is about 5 coats with NO sanding between coats. I'm going to give it a good sand job and one final coat, then wet sand that followed by polish. I know it'll never be smooth like a spray-on, but it makes me happy... for less than $40.

Just caught this. It's one sweet looking paint job (if you like school bus yellow). Is this the Rustoleum paint you have rolled on?
Looks great........

Yes, it's the OLD Caterpillar yellow... I'll finish it this spring with a good wet sanding to smooth it out and then the black...
This is what I've decided on:

You just going to paint over the liner?
cajun_lad
02-15-2008, 09:39 AM
Yup. That's how he did the garnet striping. I was going to spray it, but now that you've shown us we can roll on a paint job, I may just go that route. Even if I don't go with a different color scheme, it needs something cause the original white still shows through at some angles in some places. And he tried to hide the real bad spots with some spray black, so there are different black darkness 'spots'. It needs a couple good solid even coats. I'm thinking whole thing in gold, with purple stripe and around the windows. And then paint the razor and dozer bumpers purple to match. Maybe do the axles in purple, w/ yellow diff covers and brake calipers. Ok, now I'm just getting carried away.

I did too, 'til I saw the Hell Creek Suspensions sticker on the back window and realized it was mine... I do good to do stripes... and I did a pretty good job on Schlagger's waggy, matching the color and getting rid of his woodgrain...

I use Arcsoft Photostudio 2.02, it was a free program
That came with a Sony Camera I bought 10 years ago.
All the photos I've done in this thread were done with this program.
here's the link for a trial version of Arcsoft Photostudio ver. 5
