O.K. here's the deal...Had my motor rebuilt 2 years ago and have olny put 10,000 miles on the motor. i dealt with an oil pump leak for a while and the mechanics ground the pump face and the leak was all but gone. just recently I don't get any pressure at start up...it takes a few seconds to kick in and the top end rattles. It then started doning it as I drove down the road. At 70 mph I NEED OIL PRESSURE!!!! My mechanic says it's time to replace the cover. I agree. I wanted to toss it to the experst (that's you all) 'cause I trust you.

What gives and is there any other advise?

Thanks

Replace the cover-

Try www.autodogs.com (http://www.autodogs.com) first, they may have it cheaper & it comes w/ warranty.

Another place www.quadratec.com (http://www.quadratec.com) has them for $205+ s&h.

I'd get a hi-pressure spring if your pump gears are still good. www.performanceamstyle.com (http://www.performanceamstyle.com) $12.95 to your door. If you do need gears, save some money & get the oilpump kit w/ hi-pressure spring package... bout $24.95 to your door. Good Luck! smile.gif

I rebuilt my oil pump too ( I cant think of much that I havent done ). I got the high pressure spring along with the gears for 24.95 from probably the same company. The spring sure was high pressure but the gears were questionable: there were chunks of metal missing and came pre-rusted. I got better quality gears from NAPA. Just order the spring. Oh yeah, my oil pump front cover had some serious scoring, so I got one from a Jeep dealership for a little over $100 ( I felt jipped, honestly, but if someone else is selling them for $205, go to the dealership). My oil pump is holding at about 50PSI now, up from a previous 15PSI@70MPH. I hear there is a dual line modification that not only doubles the oil volume (not measely oil pressure), but also gets precious oil to cylinders 7 and 8 during high acceleration. I think this mod is from the same company that sells the high pressure spring and pump for 24.95. Yeah, look into that.

I got a new timing cover from auto dogs, the source listed in the forum message. I called the dealership and they wanted (you had better be sitting) $779.00 for the timing cover. I got it from autodogs, complete with assembled oil pump for 435.00 to my mechanics door. I have never heard of a dealer selling a new timming cover for $100.00. You made out like a bandit!!! Thanks for the reply.

Yeah... $435 is still too high for a new timing cover w/ pump gears, Dave. As I've said www.quatratec.com (http://www.quatratec.com) sells the cover for $205+ s&h. You can get the oilpump kit w/ hi-pressure spring @ www.performanceamstyle.com (http://www.performanceamstyle.com) for $24.95 to your door. I suggested www.autodogs.com (http://www.autodogs.com) cuz they might have the cover for cheaper than www.quadratec.com (http://www.quadratec.com)

I know www.amracing.com (http://www.amracing.com) sells a hi-volume oilpump w/ cover for $500. But you have to send your own cover also...as core. I chose the Milodon dual-line oilpan route instead for extra quarts & double volume oil. $$$ either way... but I'm planning on keeping my rig for a very long time & doing some performance mod's to the engine for HP.

HollywoodDave- can you give more details about the cover/pump from autodogs? Curious if there's anything extra in the setup. If NOT.... cancel the order!

I'm in the same boat with my 401 timing cover. pump gear housing is scored and the coolant passage is corroded badly. I noticed that 4 wheel Drive Hardware sells them for $239 for the timing cover and around $25 for the pump cover. $700 at the dealer is a mind blower.
Could you, in theory, shave a few thousands of an inch off the pump housing surface to get the .006 gear clearance?

I thought I'd try to save the housing and $$$, so I got my flat steel piece out, covered it with sandpaper, and sanded the housing cover until I had the majority of the circular scratches out of it. Then I measured the end clearance with my new pump gear, and it was .006" by either Plastigage or feeler gage, with gasket in place. So I put the pump housing in the vise, with wood blocks to protect the gasket surfaces, and got my BIG file going. You want to use one that is big so as to make it easier to keep the surface flat. Then change directions and go around the thing, front and back and all sides, so as to take the same amount off all the way around. Also keep the file very clean, or the clogs will score the gasket surface for you. 20 minutes later, I had shortened the housing .004", it was still flat and even. I put a final finish on it with the flat steel and 320 grit carborundum sandpaper. I tried the Plastigage again, and now have .002" clearance. The walls of the housing were not badly scored, and the engine had reasonable oil pressure before teardown, so I think it will be good to go. Hope, hope.
I guess I figured I might as well try it, since if it didn't work, I lost nothing. I would have bought one anyway.

This is not a commercial, but there is a guy who rebuilds the timing covers and does an excellant job. He sets the end gear clearanc at about .001-.002" using his custom gaskets. Plus he drills the idler gear to help it oil better, and deburrs both gears.

I have personally bought two covers from him, and a few other Jeep club members bought them as well.

Highly recommend him.

He had FSJ's while we all had CJ's, he may be a member here. His e-mail address is (was) "reno1@continet.com".

Another option, anyway.

Another option, anyway.Do you have any details on drilling the gear for oiling? Is this the driven gear of the oil pump you're talking about? Where and how big is the hole, how does it work etc.?
Thanks!
