I thought the purchase of this Jeep was going to be a part time hobby turns out its becoming a Life style. But not complaining, I would rather drive the Chero than the Range Rover. Glad I didn't buy the FJ 60 Toyota it was a toss up, think I made the right choice.

That's how it started for me too. Hobby, HAH! Sheesh, they should have a side-effect label on them! I think all old 4x4s are like that though, from what I hear from FJ-55 and Range Rover (ESPECIALLY) owners.
BTW what kind of RR do you have? Any pics? I like them too, especially the Classic LWB.

Think it starts out as a hobby turned life style. Then after it really sinks in you seak out the odd-ball ones like panel wags, DRW rigs, M715's;) then ya move on to other stuff like AMC Eagles, 1 ton running gear, Humvee tires...

Hey Jeepstress- I can put my hands on 3 right now. All 3 are baby crap brown with the shelf paper sides!
One is pretty amazing however- It has a limited leather, power everthing interior! Looks like a Cadillac inside! I cracked up when I saw it! Except for the wood grain they are all actually in pretty darn good shape!

There is still a chance to stop the madness Bill. Really. I have seen others seemingly recover. :D
No Concords, Eagles, CJ like things, rat rods, ummm, yeah. :drivin: We have taken custody of 3 vehicles this year. Ain't that enough? Forget AMC for a few minutes. The Mopar side of the family has grown to a hemi power wagon project and a pristine muscle car. Someone please stop us! The voices, the voices are calling. Gotta run... :grumble: There must be some way to make a fun & profitable business out of this. :banghead: Who am I kidding? Beep Beep...

Having OCD, I would classify it as an obsession. How many of us check in at our favorite automotive forum everytime they check their e-Mail?
Years ago my dads friend bought a Concorde new, with the iron duke 4 cylinder. I drove that car several times, what a dog.
This guy loved all the non-mainstream classics. Several AMC cars over the years, International Scout, Studebaker Golden Hawk. He even collected Stevens Rifles, when everyone else was collecting Winchesters and Colts.
I junkyard often and I have to say, Reno, Nevada probably had the most Eagles per capita. I see them occasionally in SoCal yards, but pretty consistently in Sparks/Reno. Weird.

I was hooked on jeeps since I was given my sister's xj 2.5, since then I wanted one (even if that thing was a turd, the type that decelerated when you hit the gas). The first vehicle I ever bought was an xj wagoneer that had seen many better days and to many mud puddles. Bought a GW and scrapped the xj, but now looking to get another XJ, deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole.
As for eagles, I used to work with a kid that had one that he was restoring, we used to call him 8 Track due to his original radio.

I for one..I have set my 'goal' at being *done* working on my 3 by 35..that gives me 1.5 years to finish. :D I actually *don't* enjoy my yard looking like Sanford and Sons. I *need* get back to what I like, which is working on art orientated stuff vs jeep crap. Way I figure it, owning 3 fsjs is crazy enough without having your entire house and yard strewn with stuff. If you're a single dude, sure, but I have things like neighbors, kid, girlfriend, etc. (no particular importance due to order btw) I was witness to an unnamed persons place in Colorado that had easily gone far over the boundary of 'normal', and there's no way I'd let this place get that bad. That's actually been an inspiration to do hard thinking on this. I have my little side garage and my cracker shed out back, and ATM, 5 FSJ's on the property. One is going soon, the other is being combined and the scraps gone, and that's that. NO MORE. Each jeep has its job to do as planned:
Sundawg 1979 Cherk, built as far as stock goes. DD, very capable wheeler, very reliable since I fixed the wiring issues..great for Ouray-eque invasions, weekend wheeling, camping, etc. Most it'll get is a nice locker down the road.
Hammer: 1979, 3/4 ton conversion, planned Moab pig and rock basher. Or I'll sell it before converting anything. Have all the parts more less..
1968 J3000: getting combined with the J200 to be a rez truck that can just be pointed offroad and go. Nothing fancy or much newer tech in it that what it came with in 68.
now if people would just STOP giving me perfectly good jeeps with titles, I may have a chance... :D
now..if I had a few acres in the woods..sure! I'd have the FSJ boneyard. But if ya can't do it..don't.
what's the point of having all this stuff laying around if you'll never USE it?!!! shoot, if gas ever goes to $5-10 a gallon, *everything* will be getting scrapped, and only the rich will be able to wheel..and there aren't that many rich folks here ;)

Funny, given where you live, I think I know who's place you're referring to! LOL!
If you are in good with a farmer, you have a nice place to have a junkyard. AMHIK. Only just in the past year have I cleared out the Backyard Junkyard. Sometimes I miss it. Sorta like an old friend.

Yah it's a lifestyle I guess for some... (me) ... I think I am fully immersed... or in over my head... at least I only have one of 'em and not two like I used to. The one keeps me plenty busy. Would love an Eagle but would end up being a huge curse... ugh... sort of like that Datsun...

For the last month it's definitely been a lifestyle... though it was just a hobby before. I kept going outside this afternoon trying to think of anything else I could to to keep from closing the garage and going inside... and that was with football on. That's not happened often in my life!!
Oh... and the IFSJA? My wife, who loves the Cherokee, says this place is an OBSESSION!
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I think she's right...

lol. no..it was somewhere quite a number of hours from down here ;) But we don't talk of that.. ;)
I just envision the day when all 3 are done, I can have one little spot for the spare parts and a good bench to work on stuff. Flints batcave in the cellar is a good example. Me..I just have piles of crap :D FOR NOW.
haha Tad. I'm serious. 1.5 years! :D

It is definitely a lifestyle for me. I have two and that's almost too many. Actually it's not that bad it has just taken awhile for me to get them into the shape I want them in. It would happen much quicker if the wallet would open a little wider. I figured one of these days I would have to do something different but dag gonnit everytime I drive them I get a big ol grin on my face.
My goal is to have two fsj's (truck and GW) that are dependable and look nice - something I wouldn't be afraid to drive across the country pulling my travel trailer.

I was witness to an unnamed persons place in Colorado that had easily gone far over the boundary of 'normal'
Sad to say I have seen a few situations where things had gotten out of control. To a lesser degree I see it everytime I walk into my garage (since you've seen it you know).
I saw a show about "hoarders" basically the mental illness where people don't ever throw anything away. Typically that is marked by people that can't get from one room of their home to the other for all the newspapers and useless stuff piled up.
While I don't think that explains my garage or other places I've seen, I can't help but wonder if I don't suffer from some compulsion to store spare parts?? I mean... do I really need 6 stock ignition coils? (I've had the same MSD coil for 10 years) Or 10+ ignition modules (well, ok, we all know I do need at least a half dozen of those, at the rate duraspark modules burn up), two motors, a half dozen HVAC controls, 2 alternators, 2 distributors, 2 glove box doors, 2 dash bezels, a dozen carburetors, etc.
It's like I see a spare part and think I'm somehow better off stockpiling some of this junk than passing it up. "Someday" it will be useful. Spare parts are fine, if they don't take up the entire garage with the promise of "someday" being useful when in reality they really won't be. Any of this ring a bell for anyone?? :D
I guess the difference is I know I need to get rid of it and am slowly doing so (yes all this stuff is for sale, folks). But I'd be more normal if I just threw it away.
what's the point of having all this stuff laying around if you'll never USE it?!!!
Too true.
The key is pushing yourself to realize that the likelihood of using it is smaller than the value of having a less cluttered house/garage/property/whatever.
Time to go sell stuff now.

Yup, all too true.
That's why I did this to a reasonably good 1977 WT.

The 75 was always a parts donor. It just sat here about a year longer than originally planned.
The Cherokee became a parts bin in 04. Last thing I pulled off it for use was the steering column for the J20 back in March. That helped me justify why it was still here.
The 69 was going to be restored but is really nothing but a parts bin as well. It also has a lot of rust and the 60's models are rarer to find parts for. Plus the hassle of filing for a title. We gave up on it as a project this Spring and it is on the butcher block after the Cherokee. :cool:And I do like kittens as long as they are at someone else's house. :D

What started as a hobby is definitely turning into a lifestyle! I bought my first FSJ in 2001 and have been through 12 since. I still own 6 FSJs a Commando and extended my obsession into a '93 Range Rover LWB for the wife. I took my '79 Golden Eagle Cherokee out wheeling for both of our first times last weekend. The truck is basically stock with 31" tires and I was running with seriously built early Broncos and CJs, and held my own. With my brother driving (much offroad experience) we did trails I didn't dream possible. Even the rock crawlers were impressed! Now I'm on a mission to build one of these FSJs up to compete with these boys. Hey, if the Harley folks can live and breath Harley, why can't we do the same with Jeep!

I suppose I planned on this as a lifestyle, but has turned into hobby as well. What can I say, I'm a car nut :) I think I have to agree with jeeping1974 though, it has turned into a love as well. I love my Jeep, and what it can do as well as where it can take me :fsj: None of my other vehicles have taken me & my wife the places the Jeep can, and with comfort & ease. Except for the fuel consumption part  Although, I'm not complaining, it will be less stressful when I fix the fuel gauge :D
My big problem is that I like classic vehicles. No offense to anyone, but I "dislike very much" when I see a perfectly good vehicle getting cut up, just because it was inexpensive or whatever. I do respect what everyone does, I just would not do that myself. I guess that's the love coming out ;)
