that would have to be my quadrajet by far. i havent had mine long and it has already outperformed an offroad edelbrock carb on a similar 360. the reason i say that is on several different obsticles mine had no problems what so ever and the 1406 had to make several trys.

So far my favorite mod has been to flip the Air Cleaner lid upside down :) Here where I live in CA, there's not much I can do & still pass smog. Heck, that will fail me, but it's easy to revert ;)

Summit K8600 cam. The machine shop I used when I had the 360 in my J4000 worked over was run by an old AMC mechanic. He said the biggest problems with the AMC engines was that they never "breathed right" i.e. never got enough air to them. In addition to the cam, you can see the other mods done to my engine but the engine shop guy said that putting in the bigger cam solved most of the breathing problems.

For me it was removing the 258 six and putting in a 351 cleveland.
Like Billy said, it's tough to beat the basic upgrades for cheap simple power. As far as the rest of the truck goes, crossover steering is right up there and soon to be rear disc brakes. Helps alot with 38's.

As far as cheap upgrades - TFI, electric fuel pump, and manual choke made a big difference on my 360. Not for power though, just overall reliability - easier to start, runs smoother, gets better MPG.
As far as general off road mods - SOA & shackle flip

Without a doubt converting to a 5.7l Vortec. Almost doubled the power, almost doubled the mileage and she starts and idles hot, cold and while clinging to the side of a mountain :)

5.3's are the same price to put in and are a much better more powerfull motor, and it weighs less.

I haven't done much, but the hei module and tfi coil worked wonders for the amc 360. The durasparkII and can-coil just couldn't cut it. She runs smoooooooooth! The best $40 mod ever for fsj's.:drivin:
