I know it's far afield, but here's a good 258:

I'm workin' on the manifold pics - haven't been at home in the daylight yet.

Well make that 2 other horses in the race. Who is Randy? I didn't see Randy say anything about wanting it. Why do I feel a screw job coming on.

Good luck - don't dispair if you don't get it. There are plenty others out there. Just put all the "for sale" forums on all the Jeepin' BBSs in your area in your bookmarks and visit daily. You can also post in the "want to buy" forums, but then it's more of a seller's market.

Actually, 2000 didn't claim it, he just asked about it from what the BBS shows. The seller wrote "money talks" - I'd offer to send him a postal MO today.

Guys, if you are looking for a strong running 258 I have one in my 83 Cherokee Pioneer parts car (you can drive the car to check it out). I bought the rig for the tires (new 30x9.50's) and FSJ axles for my Willys SW project. If someone has a pair of complete front & rear axles with either a 3.73, 3.90 or 4.11 ratio we should talk. The Pioneer is in Richmond, Virginia. If you are interested send me a private message.

IFIRC 83 is the later bellhousing pattern, changed in 80 or 81. Mine is a 76 and I am looking for a drop in/switch over affair. Thank you very much though I appreciate it. It is looking pretty good on the other board, he will make a decision Thursday as I was hoping he would do.
I don't feel comfortable paying for something I haven't even seen, especially an engine. I will be there Sat or Sun with cash in hand if it looks like a good mill he will get the folding green and a handshake. That's how I prefer to do things.
(begin rant) I don't think it is really ethical that he offered it for sale them another party comes into play (Randy, who hasn't posted) but it's not me selling so I'm not making the rules there. Hopefully it all works out. I sold some bigblock stuff last week that my old Marine Corps/Mopar buddy Nick called me on 2 nights ago. The parts are still here at my house and I haven't received a dime for payment. John V from here got dibs on the stuff so it's his, not somebody else no matter how many WOT's we've done, beers we've drank together, on both counts it would more than I could count. That's just me, if Nick had asked first I'd have given the stuff to him, he's done the same for me. But being a close friend he didn't play the "Buddy" card and lose my sale, or put me in an awkward position of deciding who gets hosed. I don't have all the cards here, I don't know what happened w/ Randy and he hasn't felt it neccesary to tell me. (end rant)

No problem Grease Monkey - sorry the 83 won't fit, hope the other motor works out. I did not realize the bolt pattern changed. I have a 74 Wagoneer Custom with a 78 360 4bl motor (apparently originally had a 401), an 84 Wagoneer with a 360 and the 83 Pioneer with the 258. I am trying to finish the 74 and clean up the yard a little before going back to the Willys project.

OGG, I'm with you on your rant. I think it's not ethical to agree to sell to one party, then change your mind and sell to another. They say "your word should be your bond" - in this case, your agreement is a contract that's binding till both parties decide it's not.
Also, I think it's customary that on a fixed price sale (a public offer), the first party with the money takes the prize. Certainly in some kind of transactions (like real estate), it's not only customary, it's the law. Your seller is breaking custom by holding out on the sale till he hears from Randy, but I don't think you can be too upset since there's no contract till he agrees to sell to you. Personally, I would let the golden rule determine my behavior - in this case, I wouldn't offer publically unless I were ready to sell publically.
Ok, I've written too much already ...
Re the early-late 258 question, are you sure? I'd be surprised if the 258 block pattern changed in 1980. Jeep did go from the B-W cast-iron transmission in '79 to the aluminum cased Tremac (?) trans in '80, but I'd be very surprised if that were more than a bellhousing change (ie old block pattern to new trans pattern).

I read it in reference to to doing a 4.0/258 swap. The 4.0 wouldn't mate up to the early style 258 trans on the engine side, not the same pattern, but the later 258's were no prob. Someone else here said they'd seen the same thing. AMC258 I think.

Hmm... You sure they aren't referring to the bellhousing? Typically you'd need the 4.0L bellhousing for the crank sensor if you go with the 4.0L EFI. The transmission pattern on the late 258s would change because they use the Tremac transmissions too. That means that you could bolt up the 4.0L bellhousing to, say a T176 which would be used behind a later 258, but not to an earlier trans like a T15.

I am all sorts of confused now. The guy has 76, mine is a 76. That engine can't be wrong, I should be good, my life will improve, rust will buff out, MPG will double, Jeep will lift itself and grow boggers and lockers. Everything will be allright.

Hey, you're welcome.
I did a Google search for "Southeast Jeep Forum" and got this http://www.ecoyne.com/ecoyne_links_people.php which lead me to http://www.atlanta-off-road.org/6/ubb.x
That with about 3 min of searching. I'd also try MidAtlantic and Pennsylvania, for example. I'm sure you can think of others.

Yeah I hit on one of those after I realized if I google'd long enough I'd find something. I found a rebuilt 258 in Manchester, PA (80 miles from Aberdeeen) for 250 bucks. Still waiting on reply. It was in JeepClassifieds.com. That Atlanta site wants like $50 bucks to even be able to post on a forum.
