I would like to use 4.11 gears in my Jeep, I think I have 3.54's now (1979 Cherokee Golden Eagle). Does this require a differnet carrier? I keep reading about the gears being different for 3.91 and above carriers, etc. ???

yes.

you will need 2 new carriers for 3.92 and numerically higher gears for your dana 44s. smile.gif

if your current spider/side gears are in good shape, you can buy empty carriers and swap them.

Are these carriers getting difficult to find?

Is there an easy way to identify them as being the 3.92 and above carriers?

Krage Motorsports has 'em new for $60. Used should be less than that. Trac-loc carriers are somewhat more.

If you have one of each to compare, the ring gear surface on the 4-series carrier will be closer to the pinion because of the smaller diameter of the pinion gear.

Oh ... I think I have confused myself! (it's too early in the morning). When I said "carrier" I was "thinking" housing... all the axle housings are the same? It is only the "internal" "carrier" that is different? So if I'm getting NEW differentials (air-lockers) it doesnt matter? correct? (except for getting the proper NEW diff. for high. num. gears)
