I found a J-10 and was wondering what people could tell me from this info... I'd like to use it to plow and haul a cab over camper. Not sure if it wouuld be up to that with the current axles.

1983 Jeep J-10 Full Size Jeep

Truck has a new AMC 360 motor bored 40 over with lots of power. Drivers drop Dana 44 front axle and AMC 20 rear with factory locker. 4wd works in high and low and has great heat. Has a clean body and will pull anything with better gas mileage then my 94 YJ. I love this truck but I need the cut back on the vehicles we have here.

The J10 will plow nicely, they were available from the factory with the snow boss package, seen a few in action too. A J20 would be better off at what you're looking to do because they've got some heavier duty stuff BUT for plowing and hauling a slide in camper I think you'll be fine.

Is a J-10 considered a 1/2 ton as opposed to a J-20 or J-30?

Yes, 1/2 ton with the Dana 44 front/AMC 20 rear axle. Check out the VIN Decoder in the Facts and Figures section of the Tech Library for exact figures.

Sounds like a nice truck. Alot is going to depend on the weight of the slide in camper. I've seen some Lance slide in's that'll squat a 1 ton.

Most slide-ins are over the weight limit for a 1/2 ton truck. If you're thinking cab-over with a potty/shower and kitchen, forget it... you need a 3/4 ton truck (a J-20). A pop-up would be ok for a J-10 - less top heavy - but they can be heavy too. A better option would be a shell or a low profile slide-in, with no cab-over and no stand-up height. You can get a slide-in that will have enough height to sit at the dinette, but you'll have to stoop to walk in and out. There are also some fabric-sided pop-ups that might be just the ticket.

I think I would definately look for a 3/4 ton to haul that camper. I haul a 10.5 slide in(its old and HEAVY)with a 3/4 ton ford and it does great. If you do decide to go with a 1/2 ton get some good air bags, and no matter what truck you go with I would suggest a rear sway bar. I know a couple guys that haul 8' slide ins in 1/2 tons with minimal trouble but I don't think I would, but I guess I'm just one to error on the side of caution.
