View Full Version : How would you fix this...

I mentioned a while back that I crunched "Bushwood". I was staddling a crack in what I thought was hard enough dirt. I got too close to the edge and it collapsed. The fender caught on the way down... the dirt won.

If you look closely, the fender is pretty much trashed. I have a friend who's a Dent Wizard. He can make the top section straight but the bottom is beyond a dent tech's ability.
I don't want to replace the whole fender. That means new wood... not good.
Any ideas?

Don't be afraid of replacement because the price of new "wood" is too high. The dealers just scrape us on this stuff. Go to http://www.stripeman.com. Give them a call and ask for Kevin. They sell the exact same 3M DyNoc material the dealers charge millions for, for $79 per 90"x16" roll.

Looks like time for the saw.
LOL
I did chop mine off and it doesn't look bad at all.
However, I had removed all the paneling.

Manhatten,
Pull your wood trim off and save it. You can reuse that stuff. The wood decal isn't hard to get. Go to that stripeman guy mentioned above. You can put the trim back on with adhesive.

THAT'S not a bad dent at all! My wife put an identical pucker in our '88 GW (slow-speed contact with a tree that unfortunately wandered too close to the road near where she was parking our truck... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif).
First, I wrapped a tow-strap around a telephone pole, and hooked that to some 3/8" chain that I hooked to the edge of the bumper. Backed up a few times and it gently tugged most of the warp out of the bumper.
Then, while pressing inward on the crease that had formed halfway up the front fender, I pulled out on the bottom. The metal of these fenders is pretty flexible and malleable, and most creases and/or dents can be taken out by hand. That part right behind the bumper was actually dented, so I took a small scrap of 2"x4", and used a 2lb sledge against that to knock out most of the dent. The paint didn't chip or crack on mine, so now the fix is invisible. And the whole repair took about 20 minutes.
I suppose a show-judge might notice a slight deformity of the panel and deduct a point or two in a concourse competition, so I may have to scratch our appearance at Pebble Beach this year... http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif
That's the beauty of these trucks, though; most fixes for the body can be cheap, if not free, if you're willing to treat your truck as a TRUCK! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

yeah what Bob said. you keep that 88 purty spiffy,Manhattan. but if thats the extent of the carnage from your offroad escapades, count yourself lucky(or skillful) i looked at the pic twice before i could see the damage. my bride sawed a rear bumper nearly in 2 by getting hung up on a guy cable in the jack slot. when we had the willys, she used to bring that home from the beach in 4 lo. but hey, at least she brought it home http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
