J10/J20 RECEIVER HITCHS
I have built a 2 inch receiver hitch for the Jeep J10 / J20. (possibly for the J2000, J3000, J4000) These hitches are no longer available from major manufacturers and haven’t been for a number of years.
My hitches were built by a local CNC Job Shop. They took a friend of mine's original hitch and created a CAD program to duplicate the necessary laser cutting and CNC bending for the side plates. I obtained a straight center section while at Fall Carlisle which has a “VALLEY CLASS 5” receiver. The CNC shop also performed the production welding of the center section to the side plates..
I deviated from the original in a few ways;
The original had 3 holes per side. Mine has 4 holes per side.
My cross bar is straight across while the original had had the receiver mounted under the cross bar.
My side plates are much dimensionally larger than the original. This makes my hitch heavier as well. As an added bonus, due to the heavy large side plates, it is feasible to mount a winch to the hitch. If your bumper has seen better days, due to the hitch design, a tube bumper could be mounted to the side plates as well. I have even envisioned running a roller fairlead through the center of the rectangular tube bumper.
My hitch sits under the truck about an inch further forward than the original, which doesn't seem to cause any problem. I considered moving it back further in my first production run but I was worried about the strength of the unit since the cross bar is mounted in flat 1/4 " plate with no stiffeners for a few inches. Still, I don't think anyone will substantially miss the 1 inch difference.
You will have to use a long neck draw bar since standard has changed to a short one in recent years.
I have not performed any sort of weight testing with my hitch. I don't even know who to contact for that. The original design was a class 3 with a 5000 pound load rating. 500 pound Tongue. That is without an equalizing hitch. I plan on pulling my 6000 pound, fully loaded, car trailer with mine.
If you want to tow a 10,000# trailer, I would suggest that you consider some cross bracing of the hitch. You should consult a professional engineer and have quality work performed. When the cross bracing is done, you will not be able to use the spare tire area under your truck. I haven't ever seen a J series with a 10,000# trailer behind it but maybe one day I will. It will take much more than just this hitch to make your rig safe for this sort of tow. Forget about those big off road mudders for this.
If I find out how to rate the hitches, I will have to pass the cost on in the price. This could significantly impact the price. There is probably some need for a materials or mechanical engineer and additional destructive testing in a lab environment. (Please interpret as "Cha-Ching!")
The original hitch that I used as a pattern came off a 1987 J-20. It was modified to fit on a 1974 J-20. I built my prototype for a 1974 J-20 and have created a second model to service trucks up to 1987. I have 2 versions of the hitch.
I have no experience with any earlier J2000, J3000 or J4000 trucks. My 74 Hitch might fit but I will need a picture of the rear spring perch and I would sure like some measurements of the truck's frame.
At the current time, I am on my second production run of hitches. I have 10 74-87 J10 or 76-87 J20 hitches. (Note, the next production run will probably cost $100 - $200 more since the cross bars, used in the current design, will soon be unavailable.) All fasteners are provided with the hitch. I didn’t provide any directions but the installation is very, very straightforward. I can provide a picture of the 74 spring perch.
At this time, I can sell the hitch for $265. The hitch is unpainted and the receiver has some surface rust on it. Eventually, I will get them cleaned up and painted but the extra material and labor will go into the price.
I have shipped a couple of these. One was shipped from Norfolk, VA 23505 to Bellingham, Wa. 98229 That cost about $60 in shipping. I placed a 2x4 between the open end of the hitch and shrink wrapped it. All told, handling was about a $10 affair. There are some other shipping options available. The $60 cost was through UPS. Packaged the unit weighs 62 pounds. It is too big for USPS dimensionally, 25" L x 45" W x 10" H.
This is something I did since I currently own 2 - 74 J-20 Pickups and will probably buy more in the future. I got frustrated just like everyone else I talked to who had a J series truck that nobody was making hitches. The Manufacturers (Reese, Drawtight, Kurt) wouldn't listen so I made a hitch for a J series truck.
I have some picture of the hitch under my Jeep and pictures of one that was sold, modified and mounted to a Jeep in Washington State. (The modification was necessary to clear the owners custom exhaust system which was installed prior to having the hitch.) These hitches have been installed on: 6 different vehicles. 74 J-20(notch required), 75 J20 (notch required), 81 J10 Sportside. 82 J10, 87 J20 and 2 unknown year J10s)
Drop me an e-mail or give me a call in the evening after 7pm EST. It is best to give me an e-mail to let me know you are calling the day before. I do return calls but it will be after 7pm EST. Dave Moeller 757-587-5546
If you want to purchase a hitch, Let me know via e-mail or phone. I can take money order, bank check or regular check (I will wait for it to clear). I will drop you an e-mail when I receive your check with an expected ship date. I work 40 hours a week so it will probably happen on the weekend. I will also let you know when it actually does leave and its tracking number.
