Just tore down a running but tired 360. found it very interesting. Valve covers had a very thick 1/4"layer of carbon on the inside.Rocker arms where buried with it. valley under the intake was full(as in packed)with carbon. It was oily dry like coal but not hard. The motor ran but smoked bad.Timming chain was so loose you could almost remove it over the sprockets. Gear teeth were very pointed. Don't think it had gotten oil in a long time. End play on cam and crank were major. timing cover has deep scoring from in and out play of cam and crank hitting it.Suprisingly the cylinder bore looks good.Rod bearings and crank are scored. I think the block will be ok. looks like a PAW master kit is in order. Anyone purchase this kit before? Where all the carbon came from really has me wondering. Don't know history of motor but whatever oil they used did some weird stuff. The gallon bucket of carbon I got out of this thing must be one for the books.

I've used PAW's engine kits before in Ford applications. I've always been very happy in dealing with PAW. Good prices, good customer service, quick delivery, and good products. Plus their catalog dwarfs Summit's. I hate looking in a Summit catalog, and then seeing what I'm looking for is not listed, and having to call to see if they have it. I will not make that call, instead I'll grab the PAW catalog and find exactly what I'm looking for.

I second that bent. All the dealings I have had with PAW have been very positive. Good quality, service and prices.

carbon? or sludge from shorts runs and long intervals between changes? sounds like the cars from the 50s before detergent oils were invented. no matter, it did its job and killed that motor. i'm surprised there wasnt a ridge at the top of the bores. sounds like you will need a new timing case for the oil pump chamber.

Sambo I second that opinion as well, I just did not want to get into a my oil is better than your oil war since there are a lot of Pennzoil fans. However 76000 miles on my 70 records in wag indicate Pennzoil since new at close to 3000 mile intervals pulled motor down, Valley FULL OF SLUDGE, RETURN HOLES BLOCKED SOLID, oil was getting back to pan through pushrod holes Smoke like crazy. This was not the first time I seen that either.
