I have an opportunity to get my hands on a late 80's ford f250 4x4 pickup. The engine, tranny, and body are pretty much toast. However, this thing has dana 50 and 4.10 gears. Now i have recently been looking at upgrading my gearing. I am in a 88 G.W. w/ dana 44 and 3.31 gears. Lots of lift with 33's. I was thinking about taking the front and rear axles off of the ford and putting them under my G.W. I know that there would be some fabrication involved, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

if your gonna be going with larger tires (35-37), a set of 3/4 ton axles would be nice. i'm not too sure how much stronger that dana 50 is over the dana 44s though. i'd probably look into something with a HDD44/D60 combo. it also depends on what your going to use your jeep fo mostly.

Isnt a dana 50 TTB? They are pretty weak anyway, wimpy axles, not much of an upgrade from a dana 44

IIRC, the D50 uses the same carrier & pumpkin housing as the D44. Coondawg, I think you may be right about TTB too.
If it were a pre-'80 F250 and the price was right - I'd jump on it.

WOW!
Ford Twin Traction Beam axles would a challenge to install under the nose of a Wagoneer.

So could I just take the gears and carriers out of this thing and put them in my d44's. I thought those axles would have been much stronger, being out of a 3/4 ton full size truck.

I dont know if the d50 uses uses the same ring and pinion, or carrier. They might be the same size, but I'm not sure if they are the same. The rear of the truck is going to be a sterling most likely, so that won't work either. your best bet for 4.10 gears is going to be out of a chebby

Older Ford & Dodge 3/4 tons used D44HD front axles (same as a J-20) - same as a standard half ton D44 except for bigger hubs & marginally thicker tubes.

Thank for all of the feedback here. I think I need to keep looking.
Older ford or dodge...like what years?

I assume since you were initially looking at the Ford front axle that you have a drivers drop FSJ. If so, you want to stick with looking for a Ford donor - ideally '76 to '79. Don't rule out a 1ton SRW donor truck, you may get lucky & find a HP-D60 under the front of it.

Cool. I will keep my eyes open. Lots of good old junk out here.
Thanks
