may be getting a 78 J10 front D44 thats set up for SOA.

I've been told a front 44 will fit under my 68 J3000. Now..

Considering the Glad is SOA already, it should work right? It has the t-18/d20 under it. Driveshaft should be the same.. stock springs are inverse, but got a donor coming with good packs in it. Figure lifting the rear 6" will be the the fun part :P

ideas? comments? reality checks?

def not a concrete plan, but figured it'd be neat. Truck is getting a new cab, M715 fenders, thriftside (whatever the tremors truck had) bed and a later style D44 for the rear anyways. Figure this would be cool..gets me updated splines/discs/running gear and the fun of the 327 4 barrel and granny low T-18 :drivin:

I'm not sure what you ment by lifting the rear 6"? If you have the springs in the stock location and use a SOA newer front then there should not be any lift in the front right? So unless you are using new lift springs then you should have to worry about lifting the rear to match.

Second you will have to worry about the new disc breaks and get that set up right sense the old setup was for drumb/drumb not disk/drumb.

You may also have to worry about how the steering will bolt up I don't know forsure if this will be an issue but something to look into.

I think the perches will need to be moved out on the new axle.

The '78 springs mount under the frame whereas the one you have now is post mount if its a glad.

Yeah good call Bret the spring perches will have to be moved.

yeah was pretty tired when I typed that up, forgot lift won't change.

Guess I should go out there with a measuring tape and some wasp killer

not worried about brakes. 4 wheel disc upgrade planned.

You will get just a little lift because the axle tube is slightly bigger diameter on the newer axel. Then ya just slap some blocks in there right?

Another thing to think about is that you will have a different lug pattern on the 78- 6 on 5.5" than what is on the rear of your 68- 5 on 5.5". I believe you can swap to ford rotors to get the proper lug pattern to match the rear but it may not be as simple as just changing the rotor, I think the spindle needs to be changed out too.

swapping front AND rear 44s. Losing some gearing (the newer ones are 3.54, old ones were 4.10/11) but I like benefits.

if ya inboarded those spring hangers youd get a solid 6" of lift. might be able to do that in the rear too. i dont know on the older trucks if its soa like a newer one.

mm it is SOA front and rear stock.

Well..there is a Lincoln 4000 series welder available to me.. *chuckles* I don't need to make a hardcore wheeler out of it, just wanted to update the diffs/brakes and get the replacable hardware outta the 60s and into the disco era at least.

Actually I think it was the *rear* 44 thats a bolt in, right Tad? (you told me) :P

I'm okay with the post mount setup, don't plan on bouncing it off rocks. If I can bolt up the rear and level with small blocks, thats cool. And any later SOA 44 up front would just need perches moved on the tubes and steering link figured out (or swap in a saginaw box). Right track?

I'm going to be in the same boat soon.

I just picked up this as an axle donor for my '67 J3000:

I haven't had a chance to get out and measure things yet, but from what I've read, it looks like the rear spring perches should match up. The front will get new perches welded on and then I'll have to figure out the steering. I'd like to adapt the J-20 box to my J3000, but we'll see have to see how that works out.

Refresh my memory, we are talking about swapping a hanger mounted JTruck rear 60 over to a post mounted rear 44 JTruck?
It's early here still, help me out a bit.

Nope-
I got this one from "spaulding". He posted it in the For Sale section about a month ago.

Once again I had a VERY pleasant business transaction with an IFSJA member:thumbsup: .

Check list for getting J3000 ready for Ouray 2008:

- Aquire big axles with big, modern(ish) brakes.....Check!

A quick measurement this morning:

Both have 2.5" wide leaves (rear).

Rear springs center to center:

'78 J20 = 50.25"
'67 J3000 = 50.25"

tad- well its not early here and I hav a Pabst hangover, but..:P I had been talking 44 not 60. The 60 is a dodge 60 thats going in the new Chero next year.

frank- awesome!!! Looks like we're doing close to the same thing! I really wanted to be the first to wheel a 327 J3 up there, but don't let that stop you :D Glad to hear thats the truck you're bringing out.

Gambler-

Don't worry, you still can be the first- Mine's a 232 right now, but (if all goes as planned..) will be getting a Buick 350/TH400/Dana20 transplant.

Soon to be in the same boat...

I think I am picking up a 75 J20, as an axle doner for my 67 Gladiator..

It has the whole drive train... thinking about swapping the body...

If that works out... I will have a whole 67 frame/327 4bbl motor/drivetrain. For sale.

not bad, and you can swap in a bigger buick easily

I'm sure it's been a looooong time since a jeep 327 crawled those mountains..

here's a pic of mine from the pass side.

Now..what would you do for the ubolts/spring pads? Just use the later ones?

man..these things look great with no weight on em. They inverse when sitting on the ground

new ones coming this weekend

Well you could use perches from TTs Fabworks or just find some off ebay. I think Tad also has U-bolts so you could use those as well. If not just look around and see what you find. Like I said I'm sure ebay will have it if no where else does.

If you want to keep the older style I know Hellcreek makes an upgrade kit for the gladiators but don't know if they would work on the new axle.

I stole that from the Hell Creek site.
I think you should contact Tom there at HC, that's a nice kit for 2" wide front springs.

That is the solution for you too Ryan. HC ubolt kit will be much better than the stock ubolt setup on your Glad.

indeed!

looks like the rear ubolt plate, just..newer :)

donor truck is here. rear springs are stock, but have GIANT overload packs on them, AALs, maybe a pinto squished in there too for good measure. I'm guessing each pack must weigh 200lbs :P (not really kidding). Front springs have decent arch.

Revive this thread...

I am tearing down my J20 now... 67 J3000 is in great shape...

Don't know what I am going to do until I have nothing else to do...

I have two 360 longblocks... one reported to be in good shape. a t18a 4 sd.... And my whole 327 4bbl...

One way or another, my 67 will be driveable someday...

double revive. Frank, any progress on yours? I'm getting close to starting on mine.

I did ask HC about a price on those plates, never got a reply.
