I was reading this on another board
1980+ wagoneer D44s are the wider of the two Wagoner D44s (or wide narrow tracks).
In terms of FSJ D44s, there are 4 widths, narrow narrow tracks, wide narrow tracks, narrow wide tracks, and wide wide tracks.
I was confusing a wide narrow tracks with narrow narrow tracks.
See this link:
http://www.rps4wd.com/tech/dana44.htm (http://www.rps4wd.com/tech/dana44.htm)
Wagoneer - narrow narrow tracks, up to '79, passenger diff: 58.4"
Wagoneer - wide narrow tarcks, 80+, driver diff : 61"
Cherokee - narrow wide tracks: 62-63"
Cherokee - wide wide tracks: 65"
I thought all narrow tracks were 60" and wide tracks 65???
well ive read that w/t cherokees arent as wide as j-truck axles in the front, but i didnt know there were two different cherokee w/ts

the WMS can vary with each manufacturer to a degree. but to classify them like that... someone has way too much time.
sure j-trucks are a bit wider in the rear, but this wide narrow thing just makes it confusing.

How about the kind of axle itself, is there a year/model break down of what car has which? And which are stronger?
What I have found over the years...
All the following info based on:
74 upto 79 only.
1/2 ton bolt pattern only(6 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern)
All DANA 44 axles.
Narrow track front axles (waggies and narrow cherokees) 61" wms to wms
Wide track front axles (j-trucks and wide track cherokees) 64" wms to wms
Narrow track rear axles (waggies and narrow cherokees) 58-1/2" wms to wms
Wide track Cherokee rear axles 61" wms to wms
Wide track j-truck rear axles 65-1/2 wms to wms
all measurements are +/- 1/2" depending on how well you measure.
And I could be off on the wide track front width, but I do know it is a little narrower than a wide track j-truck rear.
And all Jeep truck rear ends with the 5 on 5-1/2 and 6 on 5-1/2 bolt patterns from 1947 to 1979 are the same width.

I looked up tie rod end for 80 Cherokee. Two sizes are listed. Only two. As in, Narrow Track and Wide Track.
The narrower one will also fit Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer according to partsamerica.com x-ref.
The larger of the two, presumably for WT axles lists the following as other vehicles it fits.
1974 - 1983 CHEROKEE (http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductGuideEngines.aspx?MfrCode=MCQ&MfrPartNumber=DS915&Make=JEEP&Model=CHEROKEE&Begin=1974&End=1983) http://www.partsamerica.com/images/spaclear.gif 1974 - 1987 J20 (http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductGuideEngines.aspx?MfrCode=MCQ&MfrPartNumber=DS915&Make=JEEP&Model=J20&Begin=1974&End=1987) http://www.partsamerica.com/images/spaclear.gif 1974 - 1987 J10 (http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductGuideEngines.aspx?MfrCode=MCQ&MfrPartNumber=DS915&Make=JEEP&Model=J10&Begin=1974&End=1987)
To me this pretty clearly says that the J-truck and WT Chero axles are the same width, as we have always thought / heard.

I have had at leas one of each, and in my experiance, the pass drop N/T D44s were the same width as my driver drop N/T D44s, within less than an inch.
On the other hand, my W/T pass drop D44's were not as wide as my pass drop J20 D44/D60. I dont remember the difference, but for some reason, 1.5"-2"s is coming to mind..

My Chero (WT) has the original axles, and I also have a matching set from a '79 J-10 as spares. The Chero's front axle is 64" WMS, and the J-10's front is 65" WMS. The J-10's rear is also 65". The Chero's rear is 61"
That's not going by what I've read, that is what I measured in the garage & backyard. I'm running Toyota billet spacers on the Chero's rear to make it track the same as the front.

I have been trying to find the length of the J 10 inner axles. I need to know the length from the center of the u-joint to the end of the shafts. If anyone would happen to know that, I would be very grateful.

The J20 (3/4 ton) front end is only wider at the hub, the placement of the wms flange to the spindle is different than the J10 (1/2 ton) they both use the same inner and outer axle shafts.

Yes,
True also for the WT fronts of compatable years.
I'm running RockCandy's WT old/spare front shafts in my J20 front axle, numbers punched out the same for the entire pile that was here.
