View Full Version : Identifying engine
How do i identifying what size engine i have in my new (to me, obviously) 78 wagoneer. The tag that is supposed to be on the right valve cover is missing. Is there a stamp somewhere else on the engine i can look at? TIA.

if its anything like my 77 j20 just look underneath the driver side motor mount on the block, there you will find the size of engine #'s welded on the block...mine says 360
hope that helps

your VIN should list your engine size unless the DSPO swapped it out. It should go something like this: J8A15NNXXXXXX. The last letter will indicate the engine others are, A)258 I-6 1v; C)258 I-6 2v; H)304 V-8 2v; N) 360 V-8 2v; P) 360 V-8 4v; Z) 401 V-8 4v
Also try looking on the top of the engine compartment to the right of the radiator it should have a sticker telling of the specs.
Oh yeah welcome to the best place on the web for info on your new and wonderful FSJ!! http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
hope that helps,

I've got a feeling that the engine might have been changed by a previous owner, so i dont think the VIN is going to tell me correctly. So it would have to be something on the engine its self, thanks again.

I was going to say that it's either a 360 or a 401, unless it's a 2-bbl, in which case it would only be a 360, but if it's been swapped, then you have to look at the raised numbers cast onto the side of the block, right behind the motor-mount bracket. There is a sheetmetal tag on the right valvecover that has the code for the engine, but that's easily swapped as well, so it would be no use in your situation.

If it's a 2-bbl, then it's unlikely that you'd have a 401. It's most certainly a 360, or possibly <gasp!> a 304. The casting on the side of the block is the way to tell.
