I've been hanging out around here long enough, I should have picked up on this by now, but why are some Cherokees referred to as Widetracks, but not all? I don't see any differences, did some actually have wider axles, or was it just a model/marketing thing?

there were narrow track cherokee's(mostly 4 doors) and wide track cherokees(2 door only) the widetrack cherokee does have wider axles i then around 3-5 inches wider than a n/t version. the only widetrack was a 2dr with fender flares that stuck out past the fender about 3" not just the small little bump around the wheel well opening that n/t's have.

wide track cherokees have wider axles and metal fenter flares...narrow tracks are like wagoneers width but 2 door

Also, notice that all J trucks have the wider axles and flares. They are just not refered to as W/T's since there was no N/T version.

Well, there you have it! That didn't take long at all! Thanks for all your wisdom, guys! One of these days, I want one of these big beats to tow my TJ and haul the family on vacations, tow the boat, etc, all the stuff that these wimpy new SUV's can't do!:fsj:

OK, more questions. Are the wider axles the reason behind the different offset differentials I hear/see people talking about? Only ever having experience with recent models in person, I don't get the whole pasenger side / drivers side offset thing! I know what it means, I just don't get why they made different ones?

Some had offset rear axles since the output from the quadratrac was offset.

The widetracks have wider axles than the narrowtracks but there were just wider, not offset more or less.

So it's the quadratrac that necessitates the offset front & rear axles, not the widetracks? W/T without Q/T would have normal offset axles?:banghead:

most modern day rear axles are centered, jeep way back with the dana 18 made it so that the front and rear differential were offset to the passenger side so it would be easier to go over an obstacle, the bw1339 (q-trac) is the same way. the other tcse in the 70s for fsjs was the dana20 and that was a slight offset in the rear. in 1980 jeep went with the np tcases and the front became driver offset and the rear became centered.

most all widetracks have the q/t t-case i have never seen a stock widetrack that came with a d20, if it had a manual and a d20 it would have a centered rear diff and be widetrack(i would love to find that)
passenger side vs drivers side is for the most part post 80's and pre 80's difference, chevy stayed passenger side into the mid 80's i think.

Very helpful, thanks! Since I'm picking your brains, anybody know where I can see all the different grilles these Jeeps came with? I saw the survey forum yesterday, and I only know what 2 of the grilles are!

My 79 Chief W/T came with a T-18, D20, and off-set rear diff...
