the 87GW I'm buying is down in TN, I'm up in MI. I know its 4wd of course but not sure which version and the haynes book I just bought gives little help. Its a 360 w/auto cany anyone direct me to a source which will help me figure out which trann and t-case combo it (should) have?

I know amc/Jeep went through several different 4wd drive systems. I seem to recall a JP magazine some years back that listed and described them. can anyone refeence me t a discussion that covers that?

I know some systems do not permit lock-out hubs, others do. I'm thinking that loc-outs MIGHT help lower wear and tear as well as maybe help mpg a small amount, IF they will work on this car since it will mostly be used for highway driving.

If it is a "normal" G=Wagoneer it would have a 229 If it is a odd ball fleet or special order with locking front hubs it has a 208.

I hate asking dumb newbee questions, but is the 229 system one that can be fitted with manual locking front hubs. do the manual hubs, actually save much in terms of the wear and tear and mileage. I know the 51 WPU I'm selling, and the 64 J-200 I'm keeping have them. I'm still confused with all these Slectrac/Quadratrac etc etc systems, which ones which years and their pros and cons. If the '87 has'em they're under the chrome hub covers.
I've been tearing my stacks of magazines apart looking for that article all afternoon trying to find it IIRCC it even had diagrams explaining the various systems.

You can, but you don't want to. The 229 is a full time/part time case. Meaning you can put it in 4wd and leave it there, even on pavement. If you install hubs, then forget just once and slap it into 4wd you'll burn up the viscous coupler (the limited slip part of the t/c).

i have lockouts on mine, and like it. if you were to put it in 4wd with the lockout disengaged, you'll know it immedietly,it'll feel like your tranny is slipping.

however,i'll also say you'll see no increase in economy.if that's what you're after,look elsewhere.
