As long as I can remember I have always had this problem. When it is really cold out, I have problems starting. I always depress the gas pedal once, and then turn the key. She always fires right up, kicks in to fast idle, stumbles then dies. The second attempt is always succesful though. What is the dealio?

And she idles a tad stumbly when cold, but when warm, she idles fine. Any ideas? Probably carb related... which I am getting rid of soon, thank God! EFI baby!

I have that exact problem. I posted this last year and wasn't able to track it down. It only happens on the first startup of the day. after many times of being under the hood to find the problem I believe it is electrical. now where to go from there? I can only theorize this but, I believe it is related to the starter. see once in a while I have a starter that acts up when cold. but seems that when it acts up it will not stall after startup. I changed the relay and ignition switch. no change. maybe someone else can inform us greater, good luck.

Yeah, exactly. Only once a day, first startup... No clue! :/

gotta be fuel related. i too had the same problem. i pretty much ignored it. i put in an msd 6a, which did nothing in any way that i could tell, for any problem. after a few months i took it out and sold it, along with the blaster coil. i then put in a jacobs pro street, which didnt do anything for that problem, but after a few months the pinging went away, so i could run mid-grade gas. i tried regular, but i had to retard the timing so far that it had no power. i then put in a used holley pro-jection (old, analog type), and an edelbrock 4bbl intake. INSTANT startup and drive-away!!! pinging gone, now running regular at stock timing. btw, if i lean out the mixture at cruise it runs fine, until i take an off-ramp and accelerate onto the next road. then its ping city. if i reset the mixture to my cruise setting it goes away, or if i reset before the off ramp it never pings. it all seems to be related to mixture.

Scotty is right in that it's fuel related. The initial startup is good because your carb has a little primer fuel left in the float bowls, and it also gets a shot in the arm by way of the purge valve on the charcoal canister.

After that, fuel has to be drawn from the tank, through the fuel line, until a steady stream is available to the carb float bowls. Things to check, in order of the cost of replacement would be the fuel filter, fuel lines, charcoal canister, fuel pump.

I knew someone has had this problem also. so it sounds like vote is fuel related. could it be in the carb or is it more likely elswhere?

I had this problem before I rebuilt my carb. After letting the jeep sit for a while, the fuel would leak past the power valve gasket and eventually leave very little fuel in the bowl.

She would start right up initially, then croak. It would start back up after cranking a while (after the fuel bowl would be refilled).

Check the fuel level in the bowl before starting up.

I put a little bit of teflon tape around the threads of the power valve before installing the new one. Seems the Borg-Warner valve has crappy threading. Anyway no more problems.
