Hi Folks,
I already picked up a set of J20 axles for
my '79 Cherokee WT but I would like to find
a Dana 60 for the front that would match my
rear 60FF from the J20. Anyone have good
information as to what works best and where
I can find one? I would prefer the high pinion
type.
Thanks for any help or info!

Definitely a Ford Dana 60 '79 and up to '96 I think or whenever it was that Ford went to the metric size 8 bolt pattern. If you want a kingpin Dana 60 (easier for highsteer) look for the older ones. The newer 60s were balljoint but were lighter. I run an early 90's 60 up front and love it.

ford 60's are all driverside.
he needs a Chevy or Dodge (preferrably the chevy)

Oh, he didn't say whether or not he needed driver or passenger. I guess if he has the stock t-case he need passenger. Fords are the only high-pinion 60s I know of that are relatively easy to find. I don't know of any passenger diff high pinion 60s, mabye there are some?

The Chevy's and Dodges all use a low-pinion passenger-side front D60 in their 1-ton trucks. That would be where to look, though watch out; I hear some 1-tons still came with the D44 front.

Yeah, that is true. I almost bought a single wheel one ton with a GVW of 12,000 lbs because I knew it had to have a Dana 60 front. Turned out to be a 10 bolt though, and I found out just in time.

or get the ford and take it to the shop to swap the axletubes and shafts.

you ever try that?
it's not near as easy as it sounds.

I'm in the process of installing a Dodge Dana 60 in the front of my 78 Chief. I'll let you know how it turns out, but apart from making a steering arm for the knuckle and a draglink to the pitman arm, it shouldn't be too bad. It's a kingpin style with a passanger side drop out of an 86 single wheel one ton.

does your dodge 60 have external or internal lockouts? mine's got the external and I may be changing overto the chevy style later.

They're external. I'll be changing over when I save up for 35 spline outers since I'll have to get new hubs then anyway.

Well Scotty, honestly I'm sure you know more about it than I do. They've got Selectro Hubs on them and I haven't really checked them out and I'm not familiar with these axles at all yet. It looks internal except for a huge external selectro piece. I'm just used to the flanges on our full sizes. I'm going to swap for 35 spline outers and Warn hubs when I save the money.
