I was wondering if a CJ model 20 rear axle's ring/pinion with a Detroit Locker and breaks would swap into a '80s wagoneers Model 20 rear axle? What else is swapable between the two? This would be a swap for my buddy's CJ-7.
Thanks,
Rankin

I dont know for sure, but I have heard that some CJs had W/T and N/T models also, and that they are different measurements than FSJ W/T and N/T axles. BUT, the W/T ones fit a FSJ and N/T ones are too narrow...
I am not sure if that is true.

Basically the swap would be putting the guts and breaks of his '77 CJ-7s N/T model 20 (minus axle shafts obviously) into the housing of the '80s wagoneer.

Carriers and R&P are the same. Don't know for sure on the backing plates, but all the rest of the brake hardware is probably the same, since they should both be 11 inchers. Drums will be different, 5 bolt vs 6 bolt. Main difference is in housing and shaft length along with the way the hub is retained (spline and nut on the CJ vs flanged on the FSJ)

Brakes are not the same. All you can swap is the guts in the 3rd member. Everything from there out is different.

Rankin There is rarely a post without the words "model 20" and "breaks" together, is there? I'm sure it was a freudan slip or something!

I was just kidding anyways! THe FSJ version really isn't bad, it's the CJ version that gave it a bad rap.

Thats the truth and thats why I was wondering what would swap between the 2 because the increase in the track width and strength of the FSJ with the parts that my buddy has for his CJ would make for a pretty good axle for him.
