I am about to remove my old headliner boards and prep them for a new headliner. What chemical works best to remove the old foam?

I think I am just going to prep myself and have a shop put on the material.

When I have done them in the past I didn't use any chemicals to clean the board. I used a plastic brush (ones you use to scrub floors) and it came right off. Usually the foam is so dry it comes off easy.

you might just let the shop prep it then, i cant imagine it costs that much. The guy thats doin mine said it wasnt big deal for him. But I honestly didnt wanna do it so...

On my console I used a scotchbrite pad and then sanded. You'll never get it all off, but you just need to get it good enough to get good contact with the glue.

I strongly suggest doing the fabric yourself - it's extremely easy and you can get the fabric at any JoAnn's or Hancock Fabric stores. They're also great places to meet chicks! (Well, if 80 year old grandmas count . . .) ;)

Just use the 3M spray adhesive and roll on the fabric. I also found it helped if I sprayed some of the adhesive on the fabric as I rolled.

Thanks for all of the info. Maybe I will just go ahead and do it all myself. Any idea of what kind of fabric I am looking for?

its special foam backed headliner material, marcd above said that he got his at a local fabric store. If you strike out there you can always order it from an online source or buy it from a local upholstery shop

ok I pulled the fabric off. There was a bunch of foam and fuzzies left. I took a steel brush (like for stripping paint) and went to work. Ended up doing a great job. Cleaned up with paper towel, then applied the new headliner wtih 3M heavy duty upholstery adhesive.
Good luck!!!

Use a shop vac with attachments. Try them all and see which one works best. Turn vac on and the cleanup is accomplished at the same time. Worked for me.

Also, a couple of the pics show what the fabric looks like. Good luck.
