View Full Version : Who here actually has Rusty's Offroad kit? And othe Q's

I was just wondering if anyone here has actually got one of his kits installed on their rig. It seems awfully tempting, but I would like to here from someone who has it first.
I was thinkin that a: I'd put a lift on now and then more mods later, or b: do a shackle reversal in front, shackle flip in back for lift, then other "stuff".
OR c: SOA. It is tempting, but I'm not sure about it all. Some of you guys say it can be done in a weekend. Knowing me, a year.
Any ideas on what to do with ol' P.O.S. are appreciated. I just have an itch to do something to her. She's been sitting in my back yard for about a half a year now, and I need to get going on this project full bore. Just when the weather warms up that is. http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif Boy, I am long-winded http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/smile.gif

I think everyone is skeptical about this lift. Did you hear they are coming out with a 6" kit http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/biggrin.gif . I am acually going to put another brand lift on my wag this weekend (it came off another wag so I don't know what brand; front leafs, rear block and AALs). That 6" kit is tempting though.

He posted about it earlier on. Think he said he should let us know about his experiences. Did I miss something here? http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/wink.gif

Kimbrough is having problems with getting the right rear springs... very upset at this point...I guess weren't the right length.
It been a while and still no report... sounds like bad business if you ask me... stick to what's known to fit...my.02 worth

I just ordered a 4" BDS lift from a local place here, looks like a good kit IMO. I paid $899.00 for 4 springs, all neccessary hardware, 4 trailmaster shocks, and a 4" drop pitman arm. Seems like a good price, and it has a lifetime warranty on it too. I found their site while "surfin" around, their web address is:
bds-suspension (http://www.bds-suspension.com)
It looked as if they had alot of dealers around, so you may want to check it out.

Too bad for Kimbrough. I was planning on hooking up on one of these lifts too. Looks like I will have to keep shopping around. I do not want to go w/ blocks in the rear. So I guess I will have to stuff away MORE money for that spring lift. Bummer http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif

Hmm...BDS Suspension, eh? I forgot about them. I believe they are made locally, too, in Coldwater, which is south of where I live about an hour. I just may look into them.

why do all the sites say:

Don't they realize that GW were made in 91 and J-trucks and Wag's made before 74? Is there a different size for the excluded models??? anybody????

Oh yeah, I was going to email them one time about that price. I was guessing that it was just the front springs and blocks in the back. Who knows. The site has no email, and I am too busy during the day to call.

If I remember correctly, Kimbrough's kit from Rusty's was a pre-74 lift kit. When I talked to Rusty, he said there was a guinea pig(Kimbrough maybe?) and that he'd know in a few weeks whether or not his kits would work on the pre-74 models.
AFAIK, the 74 and later models(yep, they have shorter springs than pre-74), from Rusty work just fine.

just got off the phone with rusty's (205-655-8714, http://www.rustysoffroad.com/mainsuspen.htm), said that the pre 74 4" kit was now installed on 2 rigs and that he was hoping to have them "on the shelves by the end of the month". BTW, Kimbrough says he's still waiting for his kit

I'll second Gawd, though not with personal experience. Rusty's kits are based on his son's late 70's cherokee. Thus, Kimbrough's dilemma. I got a quote from rusty a while back for springs all around + shocks for $520. Sounds like a winner to me. But them I gotta get some big tires. Does it ever stop?

Wonder if the rusty's people know about this website/forum??
Perhaps the fact that there are almost 900 people on this forum with FSJ's would put a fire under the proverbial butt. (and that we are all waiting with baited breath to see how kimbrough's situation develops)
I certianly feel for kimbrough, nothing worse than waiting on parts.. especially this long..

I just got done reading the email from David Allen Racing about the BDS lift. They said for a four spring kit w/lifetime warranty, it is 540.95. They call their springs the "glide ride system". Sorta like softride kit, I guess. The 279.95 was the front spring/rear block lift. Seen as how they are built locally, and stuff like that, this is tempting for me. Has anyone here run a BDS lift before?

Lemme give you guys an update:
I have spoken with Rusty many times over the past 4 months about getting rear springs for my 1974 Wagoneer.
First he claimed that he was having a set of springs made for me.
Good!
Then he claimed they were ready and he just couldn't get to them 'cause the winter weather was so bad.
Fine.
Now he says that in fact they are not ready because the rear springs are different in width front to back and he's had to go back and remake them.
Whatever...
Rusty's springs ARE very well designed. They are exactly like Skyjacker's Softride springs. BUT, I do not believe that he has actually installed a set of early model springs on ANY FSJ to date. As far as actually having them "on the shelf" by the end of the month - I'll believe it when I see it.
Rusty does know about this website.
(prove me wrong).
For whomever it may concern: the rear springs for Rusty's 4" suspension measure 54&1/2" eye to eye. Both eyes are 1/2 inch in diameter so get out your tape measures before you buy and Please call Rusty if you have any questions.
I am currently looking for a later model Waggy so I can use the kit that I bought(its been 4 months since I drove my Wag). Sorry for the bandwidth and have a nice day.

thanks for the update Kimbrough. Since there are no other spring options for both front and rear spring for pre 74 I'll be watching Rusty closely and keeping my fingers crossed that he will get something on the shelf soon.
BTW, your Marvin the Martin floormats crack me up - and get my vote for coolest FSJ upgrade I've seen on the site so far
