Drain the block REAL GOOD before you change a freeze plug. Yeah, I know, it should go without saying, but I thought I drained my block just fine. 20 minutes later when I was getting an antifreeze shower and couldn't move because my engine hoist was in front and to the sides of me and I couldn't scoot down because my beer gut was stuck on the threads of the passenger side u-bolt. Didn't make much of a mess...my shirt soaked most of it up. The rest hit me in the face.

I like to call them "life's little misadventures".

Yep, and I just discovered it'll make you poo like crazy too.

Blech!!! NEVER swallow the stuff. It is HIGHLY toxic. Not just to pets, but also humans.

It can do NASTY things to your liver. Just before it kills you.

That's just your body trying earnestly to rid itself of a deadly toxin! That stuff is murder on all the bodily organs, and can make your liver and/or kidneys shut down in short order. Once that happens the shovel--rather than the scalpel--is usually the ultimate tool of choice in the end to take care of your situation.

I suppose a search on the WWW will reveal an effective system for fully evacuating the coolant system in prepping for engine disassembly. The better shops likely have such as system--to the $tune of over five figures, but there may be something else available for quick purge....

Meantime look for other petcocks--or other ways and means of getting the jacket completely drained.

If you look closely on the side of the block down near the where the motor mounts attach you will see a pipe plug. If you remove them, and then replace both with a petcock you will be able to drain the engine with ease. I usually put a 5 gallon bucket under the engine, open one petcock and then move on to tearing something else up. ;) Within short order, the block/rad etc is drained with no spills......unless you count turning the bucket over later in the process a spill. :o

Yeah, yeah, I know how I was SUPPOSED to have drained it. Good info, though. Anyone who doesn't know how to drain the block properly...read up, it wasn't pleasant. I only got a few drops of it down, I'm not worried about it. I've ingested so many chemicals accidently at work and I've gotten SO MANY chamicals absorbed directly into the ol' blood stream through cuts on my arms and hands that I'm pretty much screwed no matter how you look at it. Guess I get to add antifreeze to the list. Not the best attitide but, eh, whatever. On another note the radiator change is done now too. About to go tackle the flexplate. Herc better be happy.

Used to work with a guy who swears up and down that he knows what hydrazine tastes like.

He knows what hydrazine tastes like and is still alive? Sounds like a load of well... I know that stuff is dangerous as heck, they'll make you go to the hospital if you just get a whiff of it and watching the Fire Dawgs in action in thier silver enviro suits around it makes me belive that stuff is dangerous. I'm glad I'm not on 16's anymore for that reason.

Don't want to get too OT here, but no, he's not full of it. Anytime you see any of the fire department personnel or fuel shop guys out there in their little suits responding to a hydrazine emergency it's about a 50/50 shot that a crew chief in his shirtsleeves has already been hit with it. Kind of makes me wonder why fuel shop troops get hazard pay for working with the stuff when I've never met one who's been exposed because they have protective gear. The first thing we do when the jet rolls into chocks is check the hydrazine detector pellet for exposure. The drain for the hydrazine bay is right next to the pellet. Crew chief looks up, hydrazine drips in the face. I've been exposed to the fumes, didn't get rushed to the ICU. They draw some blood, tell you to shower and change and send you back to work. The guy says he went to the ER, they did a slew of blood tests, gave him some stuff, observed him for a few hours and gave him a few follow up appointments. I wouldn't put it up here if it was heresay.
