2 GW's, 1 an '87 and 1 an '89. Both seem comperably equipped, but what's the real difference mechanically? Both w/ 360's, 727 TF, stock and original transfer cases (but don't know which, and stock axels.
Also, will the same grill work in both of them?
John
Mostly everything should be the same. Depending on what options they came with (rear cargo cover, overhead console, rear wiper, towing package, etc) there will be small differences.
Grills should interchange
229 transfer cases
dana 44 axles front and rear
I believe one difference is the starter.
If your deciding on which to get... towing package gives you better gears (3.31)

Yeah, what he said. You might just want to pick the one with less rust...
The grills should be the same, I think. Grills are swap-able from pretty much any full size to another. A lotta people like the "razor" grills, and swap them in, or the "rhino" grills.
The NP229 has a viscous coupler, which is expensive to replace. It allows for 4WD high range operation on the road, without damage to the drivetrain.
The only difference I'm aware with them is the overhead console was not an option in '87. I think the '89 might have the rear window wiper (the '87 doesn't have it).

Yeah. the '87 models didn't come with rear wipers. The '87 models also had gold speck on its alloy rims as its stock wheel. The '87 didn't have an overhead console.
