I've been working away frm my computer for a while so have not visited here for a month or so.

I just bought the 87 GW Daniel had listed in the for sale section. I'm visiting down here in TN and happerd to see it where he had it parked for sale. we reached a happy meeting of minds and wallets. I'll have to get back down here next month or so and drive it back to MI.HE told me he'd googled the FSJ site and listed it here.

couple of general questions.
it is very clean, real nice interior a small amount of rust on one rocker and a couple small perfs on the lower rear quarters but the rest is real solid. 189K on the odo.

the engine sounds real nice very smooth and quiet no tics, burps, chirps or squeals. brakes are real positive and the tranny has no slippage or clunks. got it up to driving temps with no issues (not hard since its been 100+ for the past week and a half). no drips on the ground where it has been setting.

other than the rust, one other obvious problem, the tail gate glass hangs up a couple inches from closing. any quick suggestions on what might be causing that?

like I said the engine looks and sounds good real, but there is a little bit of oil in one of the pockets on the intake manifold on the drivers side, roughly above the 3rg plug fromthe front. the gaskets around the top of the heads seem clean and dry. anything that could be causng it to drip from the air filter, like maybe part of the PCV system or something?

IF you were to plan a 500+ mile trip home in a new-to-you, pig-in-a-poke GW of this vintage what would you do/plan for a safe and hopefully uneventful trip home? I plan on having a complete fluid change and grease job, carry extra oil and coolent, some hose clamps and hose repair stuff as well as my auto tool box.
any suggestions or tips'd be appreciated.

Upgrade your AAA coverage....

JK....

Go for it... have the balance on the VISA low and set out on the adventure...

Sounds like it will make it just fine...

Make sure that the garage that does the work is good. If any hoses feel spongy, replace them then.Check condition of spare tire before you leave. I would carry jumper cables, fix- a-flat & a small air compressor.

sounds good so far.

anybody got a suggestion on possible sources for that oil on the intake? or the problem with the rear glass?

Some may disagree with the following advice, but after I bought it, I would take it to the closest WalMart for an oil change.
They offer a full synthetic oil (Mobile1) change for about $40.
It would be much better if you change it yourself in the Walmart parking lot, but not a good idea.

Take a hydrometer to test the coolant.

I would bring all the stuff you listed, plus some jumpers cables and a some type of tow strap in case are need to be pulled from the highway.
A Floor Jack, while big and heavy, would be nice to have.
Can never have enough tools.

I recently went on a 700 mile trip in my J20 to retreive a Diesel Donor.
I think I had half my tools with me.
While I did not have any issues (Thank Goodness!), my son and I had a wonderful adventure.
Good Luck, be safe and have much fun!
