I recently installed an air/fuel ratio gauge. It's the one from JCWhit. Anyway, the thing seems to be working some of the time, but...when I'm driving down the highway at, say, 55, I get no reading on the flashy lights, but when I let off the accelerator abruptly, the thing lights up like it should, or...when I'm crusin' down the highway at, say, 55, and I juice it, the little gauge lights up too.

where did you locate the sensor on the pipe? how far from the end of the header/manifold. and is it a heated sensor?

It's not heated, and it's located in front of and near the catalytic.
Too far down stream?

and as SM asked....is it a 1,3,or 4 wire O2?.....

lets see: 1 wire is the o2 sensor voltage, with the case being the ground return. not heated. it might actually be too far downstream. you could try installing another fitting just downstream of where all the pipes come together on one bank. but you will be reading only 4 cylinders. thats ok if all 8 are working properly. i put mine (heated) just downstream of where the two banks come together at the "y". and sometimes it wont work either. i have not had time to check it out, but i plan to.

Interesting SpruceMoose. Just outa' curiosity, where'd y'plug the hot wire on your heated sensor?

mine is part of the closed-loop system i got to go with the holley efi, so it all just plugs into a harness.

I see. Can you recommend a good place to hook up the hot wire?

if you mean getting a heated sensor, and where to plug in the wire for the heater, i would first check what kind of current the heater draws, and then find an under-used circuit thats only hot with the key in the run position. if you cant find a circuit like that that will carry the extra load, use a relay (fused) from the + side of the battery to the sensor heater, and wire the relay coil into the on-when-running (also called ign) circuit. does that make any sense?

back to the original question.......it appears you are running very lean at cruise...
slamming the blades shut at speed will momentarily create a richer condition, also mashing the throttle will cause the same effect.....
make sense??

really?? wow. that'd be great if i was just running real lean! now, i don't get any ping. can that still "jive" with what you're saying?
