When you remove the modulator from the p-side of the TH-400 what parts are supposed to be there? I suspect my modulator is not working correctly; B/C my tranny is shifting way to early no matter how much I'm into it. The vacume line checks good, so i pulled the modulator. The modulator was attached to some sort of extention piece that enabled it to stick up vice come directly out of the side of the tranny. When I removed the modulator from this "extention" it had a curved metal piece attached to the bottom(some sort of flat metal spring)after removing the "extention" piece I discovered it had a small metal roller in it, presumably were the metal "spring" rides on; but the part that goes into the tranny (moves in and out depending on modulator vacume) had no spring or anything that looked like it would make contact with that metal "spring" in the "extention" piece or much less be adjusted by the vacume modulator. Can anyone tell me how this thing works and if I am missing parts. I just installed a shift kit and it's still shifting to early and have a new adjustable modulator on order but I just cant figure out how this D@#m modulator circuit works  . Is it pushed in when under hard acceleration or is the thing out??? Any help appreciated.

According to the 76 TSM, the modulator consists of a metal bellows, a diaphragm, and two springs. The bellows and one spring apply a force on the modulator valve to increase modulator pressure. Engine vacuum and the other spring act in the opposite direction to decrease modulator pressure. Low engine vacuum results in high modulator pressure.

Also, If any trans fluid is found, replace the valve. The curved metal piece with a hook is the reaction lever. The hook end appears to go inside the modulator tube. Check the valve, which looks like a mini crank, for nicks and freeness. Hope that helps.

also did you do the springs on the govoner ???? the gov regulates the shift points the moudulator adjust the shift points the gov springs need to be replaced if it shifts to soon no matter what you have done to the modulator and as for the the adj modulator it wont have the little metal on the end of it so now you will have to remove the elbow from the trans and the valve (rod) from the trans and replace it with a rod from a regular th400 without the elbow and make sure that when you put the adj moudlator in the trans with out the elbow that the front drive shaft wont hit the moudlator when you hit a bump and compress the front springs
