:fsj: Hey everyone, I have a question about something that is new to me. I purchased a 1990 GW today and it has an overhead console. I've had 3 other GW's 1986, 1987, and 1988 and none of them had this. The map lights on the console work, but there is no display for the compass/temp. Is it just a fuse, or am I in for some wiring issues? Also, there is a half dome probably about nickel diameter about 2/3 of the way back from the front of the console. It looks like the security cameras you often see everywhere, but this is tiny. Yes, I know it's not a camera, but is it some sort of photocell or something like that? I did not get the owner's manual with today's purchase. Any help would be appreciated.
Oh, I bought this 1990 today as my lifted, ignition upgraded 1988 was broadsided by an illegal alien with no insurance, and no driver's license. He hit me and now his lawyer is trying to sue me! :banghead: I swear, I think I would have more rights if I gave up my citizenship. Gotta love California.

The dome is for your keyless entry

Yes the bubble is for keyless entry and you can get the display for twice as much as the entire counsole with display through ebay. I think it is GrandWagoneers.com that sells them with matching headliner material. I think they might even sell the key fobs on their website but not the bay.
If your rear wiper works you're lucky most don't and are expensive to replace if you can find them. The last 3 years had some very expensive to replace parts on them and for some reason those parts went bad.

Good luck with the console. I've tried three different boards but have not been able to get any of them to work.

The temp/Compas computer is the same as the one used in similar vintage cryco minivans. Check the junk yard.

The console is the exact same one used in Jeep Cherokee/Wagoneer XJ's. Often times when that display goes out you've got a power issue, hard wiring it(just to test) should tell ya if it works or not.

file an sr1 form w/ the dmv. then file a sr22. it wont matter much since he has no DL. (works great @ getting licenses suspended for driving w/o insurance) but it might help. plus make a nice call or letter to the ADA, they like to hear about the attorneys that do this stuff.

Mine recently shut down also. But I noticed that the 4wd indicator light has also quit. Are they connected?

Maybe I'm not seeing the obvious but how does the overhead console get removed for repair, do you have to remove the whole front ceiling board ?

In either the sunglasses or dooropener compartment there is a screw, then just above the rearview mirror, there is another screw. Remove those, then slide it to the rear of the Jeep.

Great and thanks Kenny. One screw is in the sunglass compartment. Was all covered with black sticky stuff so I couldn't see it.
Now the front screw is still somewhat of a mystery.
I can feel three holes on the console bottom front, they are in a close clustered triangular formation right above the mirror. Problem is..all three are completly covered with the foam material. Which hole hides the front mount screw and how the heck did factory mount the front console screw without puncturing the material ?
Guess I'm still missing something ? :)

Console OFF. The screw was there (middle hole) just like Kenny said. But the mystery remains, how they (jeep) installed the console without making a hole in the consoles cover fabric.
:D Honored I activated your "love" sensor LJ but calm down, relax and be prepared. I may have more equally laughable questions coming.
