So here I am just admiring my Cherokee and took a few pictures to show you all. I noticed that there is red tape under the arm rests on both sides (see pics) I pulled on it figuring it was there to keep something from falling out but saw it's covering a chrome plate. Has this tape been there since new? (Im the second owner) Is there supposed to be lights or something under there?
Also there are tiny dots on the painted part of the dash like rust. Should I paint this too when the whole thing gets painted? It wont be the same blue as the top though it will be more like a two tone.
Except for armor all-ing the top of the dash I have done NOTHING to this so far!

All of the '79s I've seen have red reflective tape there. It's there so that when you open the door at night, an oncoming car will see the door. You should be able to get some more tape at an auto parts store.
Have you found the mystery part under the passenger side seat belt yet??

OOH OOH A surprise??? OOOH I'm going right now to look! BRB
....hey. What part? I pried open the base and saw the bolt but what am I looking for??
Pssst... are there any cool secret compartments in this thing? Somewhere where the original owner hid all his money? I hope it's not the jack compartment, you open that all you see is the ground- it's a wee bit rotted!!!! Honey had to tape it all up to keep all the fumes out till it goes in the body shop!

When you get around to painting the interior it might fish eye from the silicon in the Armor-all. It can be very hard to get clean enough to stick. There are products available from automotive paint supply stores, but I can't remember what they call it. I'm sure your auto body shop will know what to use.

Should we remove the dash for painting or just tape up everything around it? How difficult is it to remove this dash?

So what exactly is it? I know what you are refering to. I looked on another Jeep to see if it had it and yup right there it was! So what is it or better yet what is it supposed to do?

Are we all looking at the same thing? Jeepguzzi you have us all in suspense!
...Oh take the windshield out? Eewww. I don't know about that. Our body man is giving us a deal after some deal swapping but I dont think he'll go that far. I may have to live with it.
I've tried regular wax and cleaner wax on the front dash but both left blue on my rag and I stopped for fear of removing it all. Is there anything to remove these little spots that are coming through?
Ronson, I'm familiar with that additive for fish eye. It's such an easy fix compared to back in the day.

To get new replacement reflective tape, look in your local tractor supply or a store that has towing equipment, like hitches, switches, etc..buy that large reflective red and white tape for putting on bumpers or trailers, cut it to size and you got a new reflective surface on your door armrest...

My '79 doesnt have a reflector or tape, it looks like it was painted with a shiney red from the factory and is quite faded. My '81 had reflectors tho.
