View Full Version : Rust in Carb

Recently had some problems with the Wagoneer running very rough at idle, constantly stalling when stopped and spitting out thick black sludge and smoke when accelerating. Finaly gave in and handed her over to a carb shop for rebuild (Edlebrock 750 only three years old). Once the shop got it apart they said it was full of rust. They cleaned it out put it back together and it runs great now. No more black smoke, no more hesitation, no more stalling or rough idle. This is all great news but... where did the rust come from? Gas tank is plastic, right? The Wagoneer has been driven nearly every day since the re-build. What happened? How can I prevent this from happening again?
Thanks,
Lou

I would at least put an inline filter between the tank and fuel pump(near the pump) and change it every 6 months. Rust isn't doing your fuel pump any good either.

..
Babalou...
... Much rust and trash can come from any of the many storage tanks and delivery trucks that handle the fuel. A lot of modern EFI vehicles have been ruined by the problem.
... I've had the same two filters on my 401 for 19 years. If I think I have a crud or filter problem I reinstall the filter backwards (after the electric fuel pump) and run a hose from it to a large bottle then turn on the electric fuel pump and fill the bottle. Then reinstall the filter correctly. I do not have a 'sock on the fuel pick-up in the tank.
... NEXT I examine the fuel in the bottle for crud and water. When the crud and water settle I pour the good gasoline back in the tank. This only leaves a very small amount of gasoline to properly dispose of. I pour the small amount of bad gas into crankcase drainings and carry it all to my local friendly parts store.
... I use a quality Two Cycle Outboard Oil in the fuel tank it helps prevent rust throughout the entire fuel system. See link below;

I have an outboard on my boat so I have plenty of Yamaha 2 stroke oil laying around. And yeah, that stuff is great; 13 year old outboard and it looks and runs as if it was brand new. Thanks.

Good advice all around. Thanks guys. I will make these fixes right away. Never thought of a filter prior to the pump before but that makes good sense to me. I may even replace all the steel fuel (delivery) lines with stainless steel when I replace the gas tank skid plate.
Thanks,
Lou
