View Full Version : transfer case question*PROBLEM*

Last night I did a little maintenance on Blackjack. I opened the top plug on the case to check the level and stuck my finger in. I couldn't get my finger in deep enough to feel any fluid so I filled it to the bottom of the hole. Tonight, after driving it today, I had a puddle under the TC. It's leaking at a pretty good clip from the bottom of the input shaft. This would be the seal right?
It never leaked before because there wasn't enough fluid in there.
Did I fill it too much or do I need to replace the seal?
Can this be done with the case in the truck?

TIA

Sounds like a seal, yes it can be changed in the truck. You need to drop the driveshaft and remove the BIG nut on the Yolk, pull yolk off and pry seal out, tap new one in. Easy stuff, unless..................... LOL Good Luck :D

Unless what Pete, lol, you got me worried now.

BTW, It should be filled to the bottom of the plug right?

I read that wrong I guess, input shaft? as in between the trans and T-Case? Well still not so bad but yea T-Case needs to come out.

It should be filled up until it cannot be filled up any more. Where fluid is pouring out of the sight plug hole.

Yeah, front of the case.
It looked like there was room there once the driveshaft came out.

Hold on, I'm an idiot. It's not the input shaft, it's the front output shaft.

Ok thats a lot easier, just like I mentioned in the previous post when I thought I was wrong LOL. Just the other end of T-Case and a lot less room, but T-Case can stay in. Seal is $10,000.00 though :D

Not too bad, then, if it's the output shaft seal. Remove the DC bolts, remove the yoke, pry the seal with a seal-puller, tap in the new seal, and reinstall yoke and driveshaft.

Check if the yoke has a groove; if so, there are speedi-sleeves for repairing it, but they take a special seal that comes with the sleeve.

How do you tap a new seal in.... i am sure they have a seal driver..... $$$, i can never find a can of the right size

I used a PVC coupling 'I think' it was 2" anyway very cheap and just the right size. Another thing, if you use a seal puller and the seal does not come out easily, be careful not to hook the bearing that is behind the seal. Good luck!

OK I'm into the front output shaft seal r&r. got the driveshaft off no problem, got the yoke off no problem.
Can't get the frreakin' seal out though.

Any thoughts or quick tips?

I've tried screwdrivers, seal puller etc. They don't seem to work because the shaft is in the way.

I slip the seal-puller in the slot where the yoke goes, and gradually tug around the circumfrence of the seal.

Be careful not to gouge the soft aluminum bore that the seal seats into.
