My parents are willing to help me pay for a lift on my 91 grand wagoneer for my 18th birthday and im trying to decide between the 4" and 6" Bjs off road lift kits. I just paid $500 for new 30x9.5 mud terrains so would they look bad with a 6" lift and wat else do i need for the change in ride height besides wats in the kits. thanks

BJ's kits should have everything you need. Personaly I think the 6in on a N/T Wag looks goofy and the 30's you have wont look too bad with the 4in.

Trim the fenders a bit, and 33x12.50 tires would look good on the 6" lift.

unless you go with some 33's i would definately not run more than 4" lift I had 4" lift on my 2dr chief with 31's and it looked pretty odd

get teh rear track bar bracket extension and extended sway bar links. BJ's kits come with everything else that you need.

My advice would be to stick with the 4" kit, especially as a "starter" truck. It will look good, maintain good ride quality and handling, it's relatively easy to do, and you have the right tires.

If you go 6", it gets more complicated and you get involved with the same issues you would have with a spring-over axle (brake lines, driveshafts, steering, etc.) with none of the benefits of the SOA (ride and flex).

I went with a 4 inch lift and 32's. A 6 inch lift and 30's would definitely look goofy.

you would have to go with 33s or it would look real weird if you went with the 6 inch lift.

oh my Brandon, I think I just threw up a little in my mouth...

My observasion is 6" springs make for a stiff ride. Some 4" springs do too, but for the most part, 4" will make softer ride and better flex for off road use. If you go 33's or bigger on a narrow track, you are going to have to trim somewhere even with 6" lift.

I started my 88 GW mods with 4" suspension lift and 32x11.5 on my stock rims. That was good enough until I moved here and got addicted to slick rock and mountain trails. Then it was 3.73 gears, rear locker, 33s on 15x8 rims and some fender trimming. Got another inch on the front with BJs shackles and front end overhaul last year.

rofl, we'll see if the owner happens to show up :P

You know, my 6" springs are ages old now (one of the first sets Rusty's Offroad ever shipped, they were on BLT2KRL's rig for ages, then my cherokee, now my J10. I gota say they ride pretty nice, and really flex quite well considering they are 6" springs.

A 6" lift WILL look silly! Below is 6" w/ 30x9.5 tires...
Stick with 4" unless you want to spend more money on tires!

Actually, the tires look stock which would be 235/75-15 and those measure 29" tall. I could be wrong about them being stock size, though...

Stuka

Yeah, they probably are stock size.

And everybopdy can breath, I photochopped it a few years back :P Its YoungJeepers as Trickc kind of pointed out before he put his 33's on it. I just made it a bit more colorful :D

Stuka

Nope, I took it out of this video that was shot this past saturday:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=NI6LbOmRGms

It should be noted I was not able to air down because of the lack of OBA. But the jeep did well enough all things considered. The red waggy is a friend from FSJ Network. This location is a few miles from my house as a crow flies.

that looks like so much fun. did really well considering some tire bouncing. what pressure were you running? why didn't you just bring a long a protable compressor that can plug into a power supply? or do you not have one?

Stuka

The cig lighter in my J10 is shot. The trail was pretty short, wasnt a long trail run.

That was at 35psi :P I could have gone down to 20psi and still driven it home on the street but oh well. It would not have bounced so much if I had. TSL's with 35psi are like rocks though.

jeeping1974

hahaha i bet. i run my TSL radials at 18 and boggers at 15 reguardless.

Stuka

Running them that low on the streett will cause them to wear really bad. And they will flat spot a whole lot worse too.

BJ's kit ccomes with almost everything you need for the 6" lift. You will need larger shackles due to an over center issue with the stock shackles. I didn't find this out untill after my first fire brake hunting experince. Had to drive all the way home with the front shackles collapsed.

This sucked.

Stuka

The shackle issue does not effect everybody. I have not had it happen to either of my FSJ's with 6" lift springs. Although it is possible Rusty's 6" springs are a bit shorter than BJ's.

sorry for all the questions but im new to this. is there a difference between the Bj's 4" lift kit w/ ES3000 shocks and breaklines for $660 and the rusty's 3.5-4" lift kit for $500 besides the price? Is there something Rusty's doesnt have? Thanks

Stuka
08-16-2007, 01:33 PM
Different shocks and Rusty's comes with brake line extension brackets, not nw brake lines.

wagonwheeler89
08-16-2007, 01:43 PM
Is saving the $160 worth having to go with the extenders versus the new brake lines?

jeeping1974
08-16-2007, 01:59 PM
i would rather have new longer brake lines rather than extended lines. only problem that you might run into is that you might have to replace the hard lines if the fitting are frozen.

when i installed my longer brake lines, i ended up replacing some of my hard lines. its no big deal.

funwheeling

Get the new brake lines. Yours are old anyways.

wagonwheeler89

I just had all my brake lines replaced 6 months ago because they rusted through

funwheeling

The break lines with the kit replace the rubber ones with steel braided hoses that are the correct length for the kit you purchase.

If they're new, I'd save the cash.

I've had the shackle problem.

Bought a rusty's six inch lift and the front settled so much that I had to take the blocks out of the back. It came with six inch fronts and four inch rears with blocks. Settled so much that I took the rear blocks out. That is why I say I have a four inch lift and not a six. Didn't have the shackle thing happen until after I went spring over. Drove it and pounded it spring under and even jumped it without a problem. After the SOA and dana 60 it has happened once. Just highlifted it and put a pry bar in there and it popped back pretty easily. Gonna worry about it if it happens more. Haven't driven it much since. Was thinking about putting some sort of stop in the way instead of the shackle since I do not want it any taller.

Can't say if the kits still settle like that because I bought my kit like 4 years ago or more. I don't think bj's had a kit back then and I think rusty's had just come out with the six inch kit.
