I did read that this had been covered before, my Haynes manual indicates ATF for my 84 GW PS Pump. I used PS fluid, and frankly it is not really working as well as it used to. ATF is a little 'thicker' than the fluid. Suggestions? Reccomendations?

After working in parts stores part-time for the last 10 years I realized companies will come out with a product just for convienance (sp)..and to charge a hefty'r price. "Power Steering" fluid 16oz..approx. $1.98, one quart (32 oz) of tranny fluid.. approx..$0.89 I was brought up using ATF for power steering fluid and I still use it today.. The only excpetion is for Honda's and late model Chryslers.. they have there own type of fluid. As you have noticed the "Power Steering" fluid is lighter in viscocity.. I would drain some out anf fill with good old ATF.. Thats my opinion :D

I use ATF, always have. It takes heat better, is alot cheaper, and is still a hydrolic type fluid.

I called the tech support for the rblt pump i installed ()yep, phone tech suuport, no wating, grat information!!0
Guy said that the debate over PS vs ATF will go on forever, said it did not matter and you can mix em.
He said that it is probably air. I did the bleed thing, but he siad to jack the front end, turn off the motor and crank it from stop to stop 40-60 times! The turn on the motor, do the same thing.
I will try that, thanks

Well, still no dice. Steers hard, makes noise. I am going to jack it again, and bleed the pump more, I read that if you get a bunch of air, it really takes time to get it all out. So, here it is Saturday, I have time.

Hi:
Here is a GREAT tip that I saw on here just the other day !!!!!!
One of the tricks I have heard for noisey new pumps is to remove the belts and turn the pump backwards a few turns with the cap removed from the resevoir, turns out some of the pumps trap air and that is what causes all the noise. Supposedly turning the pump backwards forces the air out and eliminates the associated noise. Doesn't cost much to try it any way.
